Frederick Kavanaugh Obituary

Dr. Frederick L. Kavanaugh passed away on 07 July 2006 while resting peacefully in his sleep at home with his wife Peggy. Fred was born on 08 March 1933 to Frederick LeRoy and Julia Brown Kavanaugh of Albany, New York. Fred is survived by his loving wife Peggy of 49 years, his children; Frederick Bryan, Kimberly Shari, Diana Lynn, Cynthia Leigh King and granddaughters Angela Marleen and Julia Marie King, sons-in-law Randall C. King and Marc S. Dziak. As a three sport athlete at Glens Falls High School, New York, Fred's athletic talents earned him a football scholarship so that he could continue on with his pursuit of becoming a doctor. Once enrolled at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathy, PA. Fred again excelled academically and was accepted as an intern at Bashline Rossman Hospital, Grove City, PA. His future in medicine was taking him into new areas of interest. After marrying the love of his life, Peggy, they moved on to Canton, OH, where Fred became Chief of Staff at Doctors Hospital in Massillon, OH. They both shared a love for the SCUBA diving and would take regular trips as often as possible. At the age of 42, Dr. Kavanaugh decided to join the US Navy to pursue his love of diving and became a commissioned officer as a Commander in the Medical Corp. This sent him to submarine training in New London, CT. Then several tours, one of which was in lovely Hawaii, where he was able to expand his love of the water and his passion for medicine. His Naval resume includes biomedical disciplines of nuclear and submarine environment medicine, radiation, health and diving physics. Fred was a highly trained submariner and deep-sea diver. The underwater experience was something he chose to put on film and shared many of his underwater adventures with friends and family, as he was a skilled underwater photographer. Other interests were playing bridge, land photography, philately (stamp collecting) and music. His love for his family was immeasurable. As a doctor, Fred has helped so many. As a Navy Captain he had affected the lives of many and earned the Navy's Meritorious Service Medal and Navy Commen-dation Medal among others. He will be missed, he will always be loved but most importantly those whose lives he touched will never forget him. As a military neighbor friend of ours has written, Dr. Kavanaugh was an excellent husband, father and grandfather, a devoted Methodist, 32nd Degree Mason, an honored Doctor of Osteopathy and US Navy Captain (Ret.) as well as a great American Patriot. Dr. Kavanaugh was a pillar of our society and will be missed by all who had come to know him. His family mourns his passing, yet rejoices in the belief brought by faith that he awaits a reunion in Heaven, somewhere near Fiddler's Green, Valhalla, or Davy Jones's Locker, wherever it is that our warriors go when the Lord calls them home. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Thursday, 13 July, 2006 at the Shrine of Remembrance "America the Beautiful" Chapel of Roses.
