Frederick Schroeder Obituary

Fred arrived May 4, 1932 and was delivered to Frederick and Ethelynne Schroeder in Elizabeth, NJ. He grew up and went to school in Newark, NJ until he entered the Army May 11, 1949. November 19, 2016 Fred turned in his rifle, cleared post, and checked out for his next duty assignment.

He will be greeted by his son, James Schroeder; his granddaughter, Melanie Schroeder; his sister, Gloria Schenke; his mother, Ethelynne Ruhno; his father, Fred Schroeder; his brothers, Russell and Richard Johnson; and many others.

Fred is survived by his wife of 59 years, Maryan; his children, Tesea, Guy, Gail, and Michelle; his daughter-in-law, Jamie Schroeder; his brother, James (Doris) Schroeder of Verona, NJ; 13 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; and many "adopted" family members. He was known as Sarge, Dad, Pop, Grandfather, Papa, Lollipop, and friend.

He took basic training at Ft. Dix, NJ and was transferred to duty at Camp Hood, TX until being shipped to Korea in August, 1950. There he joined A Co 5th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division. He was wounded September 16, 1950, was sent to Japan for treatment, and then back to the States for recovery. 1950 - 1951, Camp Breckenridge, KY; 1952 - 1953, Korea, Chaejudo A CO 5th Cav and Japan at Hokkaido; 1953, Germany, 19th MP Company; 1956 - 1958, Ft. Carson, CO; 1958 - 1962, Germany, 18 Transportation Co; 1962 - 1963, Eglin AFB, FL, 1st Ranger Co; 1963 - 1964, Korea, Taegu Support Command; 1964 - 1965, Ft. Rucker, AL; 1965 - 1966, Vietnam, 1st Logistic Command; 1966 - June 6, 1969 (retirement day), 1st/77 Armor, Fort Carson, CO. June 20, 1966, he returned to Korea under the revisit program that was sponsored by the Korean people for the Americans to see how they had grown; to tell them "thank you" for coming there and risking their lives for their nation.

He holds the following: Purple Heart, Combat Infantry Badge, Army Commendation Medal, Korean Service Medal with Six Stars, UN Service Medal, Presidential Unit Citation, Korean Presidential Unit Citation, Viet Nam Service Medal with Star, Republic of Viet Nam Campaign Medal with Device, National Defense Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Occupation Medal (Germany), and Army Commendation Medal.

After military life Fred took his first civilian job at LooArt/Current. He drove motor homes for Phil Long, cars, fished, enjoyed and loved his family. He never met a stranger, and he could talk to anyone about anything anywhere. He will be greatly missed by his family and the many friends he has made over the years.

Fred was a Life Member of the Purple Heart Chapter, Life Member of the Korean War Veterans Assn., Life Member First Cavalry Assn., The Retired Enlisted Club, DAV Nob Hill 26, American Legion 209, and VFW.

Memorial Service will be December 5, 2016, 10:30 a.m. Korean American U.M.C., 4550 N. Carefree Circle. Interment will be held at a later date at the Pikes Peak National Cemetery.
