G. Blankinship Obituary

Dr. Garland Richard Blankinship, 76, of Colorado Springs, Colo., passed away peacefully on March 8, 2014, after a brief battle with renal cell carcinoma. He was born March 16, 1937, in Malvern, Ark. Preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Cleo Blankinship.

Richard is survived by the love of his life and wife of 46 years, Barbara Henfner Walton Blankinship, and their children; David (Kristin), Sarah (Joe), Christina (Marvin), and Julia (Doug). Also surviving him are his grandchildren; Cleo, Jonathan, Sarah, Jack, Audrey, Sophie and Jacob.

Richard grew up in Warren, Ark., and graduated from Warren High School. He was a graduate of Baylor University in Waco, Texas, and Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, where he specialized in Infectious Disease. He was certified by the American Board of Pediatrics and also served his country as a Captain in the United States Air Force.

Richard was a longtime resident of Colorado Springs, where he opened his Pediatrics practice in 1969. His noted professional accomplishments include founding the Memorial Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, serving as Chief of Staff at Memorial Hospital and running his private practice until his retirement in 1998.

He was an accomplished, disciplined, hard-working man. He had enormous pride in his children and grandchildren, who brought him much joy and comfort, especially in the challenges of recent years. His strong foundation, instilled in him by his mother and 12 cousins, shaped the course of his life, which was marked by His love of God, dedication to family and service to others, especially those in need.

Richard loved being involved with young people, particularly those in their early 20s. He mentored many of them and led Bible studies with Barbara in their home for several years. He was a 45-year member of First Presbyterian Church and had great joy singing in its "Big Blue" choir.

There will be a celebration of Richard's life on March 11 at 1 pm, First Presbyterian Church. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church Choir.

Every day I walked or drove along Avondale. I remember always seeing Dr. Blankinship working in the yard he loved. He was such a part of the neighborhood, I still somehow see him out in that lovely yard. Years have gone by but your family is not forgotten. (Nate & Heather Allen's Mom)

I am sad to hear of his passing. I was born in 1969 and Dr. Blankenship was the only dr. who didn't give up on me...I was 3 months premature and weighed less than 2 lbs.Nobody had much hope I'd live. I did and I remember running into him the day I had my ultrasound when I was pregnant with my son. Dr. B.is, in a way, responsible for my son being here, too! Glad I will see him in heaven someday.

I have had the pleasure of knowing Dr. Blankinship and Barbara Blankinship these past few years. From the first time I met Dr. Blankinship, I knew I was in the presence of a great man. A man who cared for people and children and someone who was kind and loving. The love that Dr. Blankinship and Barbara shared was right out of a romance novel. And the adoration he bestowed on his children is extremely touching. Dr. Blankinship was a an incredible human being and many, many people will remember him with love and respect. I am honored to have known him. My thoughts are with Barbara, their children and their grandchildren.

I am saddened by the loss of such a great man. He was my pediatrician from birth until I left for college at age 18. I refused to see anyone else! He was gracious to keep me as a patient for so long. I remember distinctly that his gentle voice was a comfort to me and his care and attention was genuine.
God's peace and comfort to the entire Blankinship family.

My whole family is saddened by this news. Dr. B was a huge part of our childhood and my sisters and I saw him until we left for college and were 18 years old- we might have been his oldest patients! He will always have a very special place in our hearts. We are thinking of all of you during this difficult time.

March 11, 2014

I knew Dr. Blankinship from Memorial's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). I was a Unit Clerk but Dr. B always patted me on the back and asked how my day was. He was such a huge part of my life for so many years. He was unforgetable because of his kindness and gentle voice. Never a harsh word was said, ever! Condolences to his family. The kind man will be greatly missed in this Seemingly Harsh World. The world is now devoid of this gentle man but Heaven is Blessed profoundly because they now have a wonderful Angel. Dr. B say hello to my Mom and Dad and pat their back as you patted mine. What a loss to Dr. B's family. The tears will come when you least expect them - believe me, I know, but they will help you heal. Time will not make it better, so don't believe those who say that. You will all grieve the rest of your lives but life gets easier. So sorry for your loss. A friend of Dr. B. Gloria Reed
