The Earth has lost an Artist. We are saddened to announce the death of Gael Ferguson Bennett at 82 years of age from esophageal cancer. He died in his sleep at his home under hospice care and with his long-time friend Shannon C. Davis at his side.
Gael was born in Colorado Springs. After graduating from Colorado Springs High School, he attended Colorado College, received his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Northern Colorado, and his Master of Fine Arts from Arizona State University, where he taught life drawing. He taught art at Southern Colorado State College, (now Colorado State University Pueblo), and he taught at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs from the early 1970's to the early 1980's.
In life he had many occupations. In addition to being an Associate Professor of Fine Art, he was a tavern owner, and his favorite job was driving a taxicab. But all his life he was finding art everywhere and creating objects in any medium he could put his hands on, to demonstrate to other humans what he was seeing, hearing, touching, and feeling. His work has been shown in art galleries in Colorado and elsewhere from coast to coast. As the owner of the Deluxe Tavern, he helped elevate the music scene in Colorado Springs in the 1980's and 1990's.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Edna Mae (Fuequay) Bennett, his father John F. Bennett, and brother Hugh J. Bennett. He is survived by his friends, of whom there are many more than he might have liked to admit.
Gael specifically and emphatically requested that there be no memorial event. Friends who are so inclined might donate in his name to a charity that is assisting unhoused people.
