Mr. Gene Howard Southerland, 80, was born June 14, 1940 in Bridgeport, Connecticut. As a member of the United States Army, he was transferred to Colorado Springs, where he served until 1963. He then opened Mr. G's Hair Design Studios and became fondly known as Mr. G to everyone that knew him. He was called home to his mansion in heaven early Sunday morning, February 28, 2021.
Mr. Southerland was a faithful member of Payne Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church and a pillar to the community. He has been recognized by The Urban League, The NAACP (where he was a proud lifetime member), Omega Psi Phi Fraternity and The Colorado Springs Chamber of Commerce, just to name a few, for his faithful community service. He was also a proud member of the M.W. Grand Prince Hall Lodge of Masons.
Mr. G joins his beautiful wife Rita in heaven, but is survived by his three children; Michele A. Medley, C. Nicholaus Medley and Jennifer A. Southerland. Three grandchildren; Alexis M. Gobern III, Anthony M. Gobern and Allana M. Gobern. One great granddaughter, Avery M. Gobern. Four siblings; Lynne Southerland, Debra Southerland, Allyn Southerland,Robert Southerland and a host of other nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Mr. Southerland's family would like to invite the community to a Celebration of Life, Saturday August 7, 2021 at Hillside Community Center, 925 Institute St., Colorado Springs, CO. Ceremony, including military honors at 2pm, with a family picnic including refreshments to follow in the park pavilion until 5pm.
