George was born on January 20, 1922 in Evansville, Indiana to Luther and Ruth Holmes. He passed away on January 9, 2019 in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
As a young man he worked for the Planters Peanut Co. in Evansville.
George entered the Navy on August 19, 1940 as an apprentice seaman and served on 5 different Navy battle ships until 1946. He had planned to separate from the Navy in 1950 but reenlisted for 5 more years as a Disbursing Clerk in Seattle, Washington. He then served in Pearl Harbor and at the Naval Air Station in Anacostia, DC for 4 additional years until 1960. He was officially retired out of the Navy on July 1, 1970.
George married Alyce Pflughoeft on September 3, 1952 in Wilmington, Delaware. They moved back home to Indiana after he retired from the Navy, where George worked as an Indiana state employee. He was instrumental in creating the food stamp program for the entire state. He retired as an Indiana state employee and move to Calhan, Colorado in 1983, and then later to Colorado Springs. In 2014 they moved to Moma's Assisted Living in Colorado Springs. George was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Alyce, in 2014 and remained a resident of Moma's until his passing.
George is survived by many loving friends and caretakers.
Memorial service Thursday, January 17th, 1:00pm at Swan Law Funeral Directors. George and Alyce will be inurned together at Pikes Peak National Cemetery privately next week.
