George Ryan Obituary

Ryan
George Edward
Ryan
March 1, 1931
January 30, 2024

Born in Chicago, George was the oldest of five children. His father died suddenly when George was 15; with his mother's signed consent, he joined the Air Force at age 17 to help support his family. He had many jobs in the military: fixing fighter jets, combat controller, electronics instructor, and cryptologic communications specialist. George was extremely proud of his service in the Korean War and earned the Presidential Unit Citation among other medals and awards. He retired in 1968. He enjoyed a second career in sales with Prudential and RJR-Nabisco and fully retired at age 60 in 1991.
George and his wife Carolyn were married 60 years. Their daughter Kellee was born at the Air Force Academy in 1969. She later retired from the Air Force at the same rank as her dad.
George proposed state legislation to exempt Colorado residents in the military from paying state income taxes while stationed overseas. When Governor Bill Owens signed it into law, George considered it one of his finest accomplishments and was glad to "give something back". He approached life with integrity, intelligence, and humor. He was a lifetime member of the VFW, a Freemason, avid reader, fitness enthusiast, devout Chicago Cubs fan, and flew the American flag at the family home daily until he passed.
George is survived by his wife Carolyn, daughter Kellee Ryan and daughter-in-law Kristin Ryan, brother John (Marlene), sister Corine (Roy) Andersen, several nieces and nephews, and many treasured friends.
A military funeral will be held at Pikes Peak National Cemetery, Friday April 5 at 2pm. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Friends of the Pikes Peak Library District.
The family extends a heartfelt Thank You for your kind condolences and support during this difficult time. For full obituary, please visit www.Legacy.com.

When I was in around 3rd grade I came home from school and there was this super handsome man in our living room watching the Cubs play on TV. He was in military attire with shiny black boots. I found out he was my cousin Corky, who I heard about but never got to meet. I was so shy, but couldn´t take my eyes off of him. I could tell quickly that he too was a huge Cubs fan. I never forgot that first encounter and told him about it when he was visiting my mom at 8 Point Lake. He and my mom were real buddies during their youth, and she always had a special place in her heart for her cousin Cork. God bless you all during this difficult time. Sincerely, Gayle Gutchak

Dad celebrated his 90th birthday in the middle of the initial Covid pandemic so we couldn't throw him a proper party. Instead, Mom coordinated a drive-by birthday party at the house so his friends could wish him well at a distance (I coordinated the yard sign rental that was installed the night before, hence the evening and daytime pics). He was quite pleased, check out his flex pose in the evening pic!

We became friends with George and Carolyn while eating Saturday breakfast at the then-Olive Branch restaurant in Colorado Springs. We met every Saturday at 9:00. A table of four soon grew to eight, with the Reeds and Steele's joining us. George became the table Mayor and held court every Saturday morning. The breakfast group has gone their separate ways now, but George was the centerpiece of the Saturday social hour. We spent many hours with George and Carolyn at our homes and enjoyed all the good times and homemade ice cream on their patio. USAF Msgt Ryan will be missed but always in our hearts. Until then, thank you for your time spent with us. John and Paula Bray, Summerville SC.
