Georgia Diedrich Obituary

Georgia Schmid Diedrich passed away peacefully on October 9th in Colorado Springs. At the age of 90 she spent the previous day visiting with and telling stories to some of her thirteen grand children and fifteen great grandchildren. Georgia was born in a small idyllic town in Minnesota where she was raised along with her two sisters and many cousins by the entire village.

As a young girl, Georgia helped out behind the counter in her father's general store and practiced dance and piano. She and her sister performed in costume at many events and celebrations around the state. In high school and college at St. Benedict's she excelled in music, playing the cello, the clarinet, and the piano.

Georgia and her husband John, a banker in Colorado and Wyoming, raised five children and took great pleasure in their company and ccomplishments. Family trips hiking and climbing in the Rockies occupied many weekends during every season of the year. The two of them spent their retirement years in southern New Mexico and were active participants in the community, church activities, and social events there.

Over the years all of the children and grand children received a beautiful handmade quilt or afghan, as John and Georgia collaborated on over 70 wonderful and warm works of art. They also loved to travel and visited most of the fifty states, many national parks and cultural events in cities across the United States. In 2000 with the help of a friend, Georgia published three volumes of stories about John's experiences in the Army Air Corps and as a POW during WWII.

She is survived by her children and their spouses: John & Viann Diedrich, Dan & Kate Diedrich, Tad (deceased) and Samantha Diedrich, Georgiann and Rich Lythgoe, and Paul Diedrich, 13 grandchildren, and 15 great grandchildren. Services will be held at 11 AM at Our Lady of the Pines Church in the Black Forest, Peyton, Colorado on Saturday, October 15, 2016.

Donations should be made in Georgia's name to the Bosque del Apache Wildlife Refuge in New Mexico.

My mother, Aggie Lucero at Brookdale Skyline, loved Georgia. Georgia was a very sweet and generous person. I met her several times because my Mom forgets who of her friends at Brookdale I have met. Our parish priest, Father John and I went to visit Mom when Father met Georgia. Fr. John is from a small village in Iowa near the Minnesota border. He and Georgia had a nice visit that day reminiscing about "all things Minnesota". Georgia asked us to let her know when Father John would be back so she could have lunch with us and visit with him more. I'm sorry to say that Father and I didn't get back in time. I enjoyed knowing Georgia very much. She had an infectious laugh and a wonderful smile which made you smile back to her. Mom is missing her and I just wanted you to know that I enjoyed her and I know that she is now having a wonderful time laughing and smiling and making those around her, love her. God bless you all. Aggie's daughter, Patsy Lowry.

I am so very sorry for your loss. Georgia took great pride in her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. I loved getting Christmas cards from her every year that included many pictures of her family.

Georgia and I were classmates at St. Bens in 1943-47. She was a sparkling student and a good friend - we enjoyed much of her musical genius during those years. I lost track of her after graduation but always watched the news from St. Bens to see where she was at. I am sure her death is a real loss to her family. I just want to offer my condolences and assure the family of my prayers for all of you at this time. Sister Luke Hoschette OSB (formerly Lucille Hoschette in college and presently a member of St. Benedict's Monastery in St. Joseph,MN)

Please accept my sympathy on Georgia's passing. We will miss the artistic interpretations on her door, usually made by her grandchildren. And the photo frame with all the family members. But most of all we will miss Georgia's friendly greeting and warm smile...
