Gerald Anderson Obituary

Dr. Gerald E. (Jerry) Anderson, passed away peacefully at his home on October 4, 2013 at age 81.

Born on January 3, 1932 in Eveleth, Minnesota, to the late Edward and Clara Anderson. Jerry lived and

traveled much of the world, settling in Colorado Springs for the remaining years of his life.

Jerry loved to hike the area's mountain trails, enjoyed the expansive Pikes Peak views and cruise on his scooter throughout Colorado Springs. He was an accomplished chess player, formidable bridge player, and a dependable tennis doubles partner. In addition to being an avid reader, Jerry was always ready to engage in conversation on a variety of topics and freely offered his views and perspectives. His passionate nature for knowledge made him a natural teacher, and Jerry, who was called Doc Andy by students, taught in schools in Virginia, Dominican Republic and here in Colorado Springs in his last years.

He served as an officer of the US Army for over 20 years, being stationed in Panama and several South American countries. He was a Korean and Vietnam War veteran, and received several medals during his outstanding career, including the Bronze Star. Jerry received his Bachelor's and Master's degrees from the University of Minnesota, and after retiring from the military, he earned a PhD in Economics from there as well.

Jerry was the loving husband, best friend and bridge partner to Belermina Catano, whom he married in December 19, 1964 in Panama. He was the proud father of four children and the doting grandfather to six grandchildren. Jerry was a true original whose thoughts and presence will be missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by his wife, Mina, his children, Margie Lynch, Karen Anderson, Anita Hunt, and Harold Anderson; sister Margaret Anderson Krogh; sons-in-law Chris Lynch and Ken Hunt; and grandchildren, Abbie, Charlie, Ellie, Roby, Sophia and Will; as well as many nieces and nephews, friends and students.

Memorial services will be held in Colorado Springs on Friday, October 11th at Sacred Heart Church at 10:00 a.m. Interment will be held later at Fort Logan Cemetery in Denver, CO.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Pikes Peak Hospice (www.pikespeakhospice.org).

Dear Mina & Family: We just heard the end of last week that Jerry died. We are so sorry and extend our sympathy and prayers to you. We sure had great times together. I am honored that I was instrumental in introducing you to Jerry at the Gulick Officers Club. If you ever want to come and visit this area again, you know you are more than welcome to stay with us. I truly enjoyed the intelligent conversations we had through the years. One does not often find people of his intellect and insight these days. God Bless, Otto and Nelly Halboth

May you all find comfort and peace during this difficult time. Our prayers are for and with you now and always.

Jerry, my fellow gringo, welcomed me unconditionally to the extended families of Panama. In just the few short years we ran together I learned a great deal but mostly the learning of giving: Jerry's spirit for generosity was and remains contagious; please take comfort in this during this difficult time. God Bless Jerry, Mina and all - fond thoughts and prayers, Jim, Maggie, Raquel and Patrick

May Your Family Find Comfort During This Difficult Time, Matt. 11:28-30…Come to me, all YOU who are toiling and loaded down, and I will refresh YOU. Through the power of prayer, Jesus offers to help us pull our load! We do not have to do it in our own strength.

Jerry was a wonderful man who inspired so many people. I have been blessed by his witness, their marriage and a relationship with their daughter Anita. I remember a weekend at Pickerel Lake, MN when I was a little child with Grandma Clara. Jerry drove the boat while Harold swam across the lake and back. He was always such a joyful and thoughtful person and he will be missed. Even in his last days, he taught us courage and acceptance.
