Gerald "Jerry" Weiss, 98, passed away in Colorado Springs on August 14. He was born on the family farm near Imperial, Nebraska, to Clayton and Mary Weiss. He was the fifth of nine children.
Jerry grew up during the Great Depression and attended a one-room country school. He graduated from the Chase County High School. He then served during World War II in the U.S. Navy as a radio operator on a Destroyer Escort ship in the South Pacific.
He was married to Sue Kiely for 54 years before her death. He is survived by their children Anne Weiss, Mary Weiss, James (Kathi) Weiss and Charles (Loriann) Weiss; grandchildren Clay Weiss, Catrina Weiss and Bella Weiss; a sister, Mary Ann Stinnette; the extended Flesher and Heramb families; and many close family and friends.
Jerry served as City Engineer in Colorado Springs from 1964 to 1969. He then worked as a consulting engineer for the rest of his professional career.
Jerry enjoyed construction projects which were a major part of his career. He worked on dams, power lines, utility and street construction projects. One of the larger projects he worked was as Resident Engineer for the construction of the Colorado Springs Airport runways in 1991.
Jerry renovated two historical houses and researched their history.
In retirement, Jerry donated time to build handicap facilities for those in need. He volunteered for many years at Corpus Christi Catholic Church and the John Zay Guest House at Penrose Hospital. He also helped design, plant and maintain the median flower bed sponsored by the Springs in Bloom program in his neighborhood.
Funeral services will be held at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 2318 N. Cascade Ave., Colorado Springs on August 28th at 11 a.m.

Jerry will be greatly missed! I considered him a friend. Loved seeing him at Penrose when I worked there and always at Corpus Christi. I'm so sad I won't be back in time for the funeral

So grateful that Jerry came into my life. He became a close friend to me and to the John Zay Guest House. He was so kind and generous to all he met. He made everyone feel welcome and was always ready with a story to share. I will miss our lunches, crosswords and story time. Rest in peace, dear friend!
