Gernot Heinrichsdorff Obituary

Landscape architect and sculptor Gernot Heinrichsdorff died on Christmas morning. He is survived by his wife Ava; by their son Othman Llewellyn, his wife Aishah and their daughter Hanaan; and by his son Mark Llewellyn and his wife Debbe.

Gernot grew up in Germany. After W.W II he became a landscape architect and completed projects for the Embassy of the Vatican and the American Headquarters of the U.S. for Germany in Godesberg. In 1952 he came to the U.S., first to Baltimore and then to Colorado Springs, where he founded The Garden Construction and Landscape Company and then Landscape Studios. Here he married Ava; they were together for 55 years.

Gernot specialized in water-conserving designs and indigenous materials. His projects include city and regional parks, national monuments, creative playgrounds, greenways, indoor gardens, camp grounds, and 16 environmental communities, as well as residential and commercial projects, from the U. S. to Thailand, Germany and Saudi Arabia.

As a sculptor he created inlaid concrete and rock sculptures, fountains, stream beds, and decorative walls inspired by the Colorado Plateau.

Gernot's work was featured in Sunset Magazine, Town and Country and Who's Who in Texas, and he won awards from the Associated Landscape Contractors of America and the local Horticultural Arts Society. He served as president of national landscape organizations.

Gernot's interests included the natural world, from botany to pack trips to river rafting, and all of the arts, and folk dancing, and travel. With Ava he explored on every continent except Antarctica.

"No funeral! No flowers! " was Gernot's request. But gifts in his honor to The Wilderness Society, the Palmer Land Trust or the Horticultural Arts Society would be perfect.

What a talented and dedicated landscaper. I'll always remember his estimate on our lot in the late 70's: "the source of the water must be a 'mystery'...and he was right.
A gracious lover of Nature
