Gertrud Nuhn Obituary

Nuhn
Gertrud "Getty/Gerti" (Schafer) Nuhn
June 27, 1938
October 10, 2023

Gertrud Schafer Nuhn, known affectionately as "Getty" (Gerti) passed on during the evening of Oct 10th, after a long year of struggle with her health, at the age of 85. Getty was born in Germany on June 27th 1938 to Jacob Schafer and Anna Marie Berta Kapfenberger. During her formative years of life she endured and survived the hardships of World War II in Germany. This experience was pivotal in creating in her a deep sense of love for humanity, for life, for nature, and for those who struggle. She carried on as a young lady who read and studied and had a deep passion for learning. This included learning many languages and attending higher levels of learning in her home country of Germany. During those studies she met Bob Nuhn and moved with him to America, at the age of 21. Even though she left Germany, she always returned and was always close with her many relatives there and her favorite place Michelstadt and Habermann's Kreutz, the family Inn. Getty once shared that as a young girl she had a dream that she had children but they didn't look like her. This dream came true upon coming to America when she adopted two sons, three years apart, first Scott and then Cito. She raised both boys as a single mother from when they were five and two years, respectively, and did so with much strength, love, wit, grit and charm. She touched so many lives outside of her immediate family as well. For almost 30 years she was a teacher of German and Spanish in Fountain Fort Carson School District 8. This community became another family for her and she continued as a substitute teacher there until the age of 82. She not only taught students languages, she taught them about life. Many times she would invite groups of students to go hike in the mountains and show them a world many never knew. Her love of nature was beyond measure and she shared that with everyone any time she could. She was a leader of hiking excursions for the CO Mountain Club, served on the CO Springs Parks and Open Space Board, TOPS committee and volunteered countless hours at Helen Hunt Falls and Starsmore Center in Cheyenne Canyon. If she wasn't in the mountains hiking, or fighting for the preservation of nature, one could find her swimming in one of her favorite places, Prospect Lake. Her greatest love in life came when she was blessed with two beautiful grandchildren, first with Kailani and next Jariah. She has passed on her legacies of baking, the outdoors, and being kind and thoughtful humans to them. Getty has often been described as one-of-a-kind. This reflects that she was a bright light full of so much love, more than most, and gave of herself to others naturally. Everyone who met Getty knew that they had just met one of the kindest loving souls this earth has known. She is preceded in her passing by her son Scott, mother Berta, father Jacob and countless other loving relatives. She is survived by her son Cito, daughter-in-law Teri, grandchildren Kailani and Jariah, sister Annemie, brother-in–law Max, nephew Andreas, niece Lena, and countless other loving relatives. A celebration of her life will be held at the Broadmoor Community Church, in CO Springs on 10/22/23 from 1:00 - 3:00 PM. In lieu of flowers please make donations to any organization which supports the preservation of nature, the stopping of senseless wars, or in supporting those who live through these experiences.

I am the mother of one of the many students who attended Fort Carson High School in Fountain. Gertrud was one of the teachers who had a deeply impact on my son in an extremely positive way because she taught him to see life through the eyes of a woman who had experienced great tragedies but who turned them into positive experiences with great resilience. In addition to teaching her the German language and the love for life and nature conservation. I want to thank her for everything, a woman of great values.... I can only say that she is resting next to God. My condolences to the entire family.

Getty made the most of "this one precious life". Thanks for the friendship, memories, and inspiration to 3 generations of the Feiler/Meinig families.

One of the first things I remember Getty ever saying (approx. 45 yrs ago) was if she could change the world, her first priority would be to abolish ALL wars. She adamantly advocated for that throughout her life. As the above obituary states, she loved and did so much to conserve the natural environment. Additionally I couldn't agree more with your statement as follows. "Everyone who met Getty knew that they had just met one of the kindest loving souls this earth has known." Love to and prayers for Getty, her family & friends always.
