You were an inspiration to womankind Grete. Today, many are following in your footsteps, you led the path for so many. May you rest in peace. You will never be forgotten. Thank you.

I have many memories of Greta running but my favorites are of her playing hide and seek with our 4 yr old daughter. Ruth, as children do, got bored with standing around at race events. Greta brought laughter to her and many precious memories to me.

My condolences to the family. I have been a runner for 40 years and could not help but be influenced by Grete. Her balance of strength and humility inspired so many. The world is a better place because of her presence.

You were great! Now you run on streets of Gold! You were an inspiration to watch and a leader for all woman athletes who followed in your footsteps. You blessed us with your graceful running, now be BLESSED DEAR GRETE.

Grete was such an inspiration to me and so many runners around the world. My running has been a little slack of late but I will be running every day for the next 57 (and hopefully return to my old running habits) in honor of Grete....she still inspires....

Historically speaking, Grete was a pioneer of women's long distance running. She truly inspired me and many many others to venture marathon running. I absolutely loved watching her run. What a women of spirit to those with cancer, to remain active - I know! I am living your inspiration - thank you, Grete. My prayers to her family.

I was saddened to learn of Grete's passing. I met her many years ago at the Marine Corps marathon in Washington D.C. She was truly an inspiration to me and countless others. My condolences are extended to her family.

Grete was such an inspiration to me and to all runners. I was fortunate to meet her many years ago as she pioneered women's distance running. She brought grace and dignity to the sport. She is truly a legend that will always be remembered.

Such a talented runner and classy lady! I enjoyed following her career over the years and had the opportunity to see her in Charleston, S.C. at the Cooper River Bridge Run in 1989. A very gracious and kind woman. My condolences to her family and friends.

I respected her skills and dedication to running as evidenced in her commitment to running the NYC Marathon and her admiration for the late Fred LeBow and dedicated her run to him shortly after he passed away. When I was in labor with my first child, I used a black and white postcard photo of Grete crossing the finish line with arms raised as a visual focus and a source of inspiration, perseverance, and victory. Looking at her image gave me the strength and courage I needed as I birthed our son.

A true visionary and role model for all women who participated in running the marathon distance. I was fortunate to meet and run in 5 NYC Marathons in the early 80's with her. She was one of my heroes.

This great lady inspired me to start running, even though I am blind she made me feel like anything was possible. She was so young to leave this world but perhaps it just means that heaven needs her more than we do and I know her family will miss her so very much. God bless and keep you, Grete.

I am just so sad. Grete was a good friend. Both her and Jack spent a lot of time with us on "Training with Grete Waitz' the video and she was a huge part of my running career. To Jack and her brothers who I know, I'm thinking of you. I loved her spirit.
