Gunnar Jonsson Obituary

Gunnar Magnus Jonsson Aug. 18, 1944 ~ Aug. 7, 2013 Resident of Walnut Creek Gunnar passed away peacefully on August 7, 2013 surrounded by his loving family. Gunnar was born in Reykjavik, Iceland, the son of Jon Bergsteinsson and Marta Gudnadottir. He and his wife Kristin (who passed in 2005) emigrated with their two children, Marta and Kalli, from Iceland to the United States in 1971. Speaking not a word of English, Gunnar and family began a new life in Walnut Creek where son Jayson was born. He was a Master Stone Mason, working for Service Plastering for many years. He was a beloved man, well known to his family and friends as a kind and generous soul. Gunnar greeted every day with a smile, was an avid gardener, enjoyed good food and fine wine and loved watching the Giants play with a cold beer. Hospitalized for many years, Gunnar drew strength from the amazing staff at both UCSF and Kaiser Walnut Creek who cared for him like family. Gunnar is survived by his siblings, Thordur Hauker and Ragnhildur Jonsdottir, his children Kalli Jonsson, Jayson Jonsson and Marta Carbajal, and his grandchildren Alexa Carbajal, Spencer Carbajal, Emilia Jonsson and Joaquin Jonsson. His kindness and love will be missed by those around him. A celebration of his life will be held in Walnut Creek on his birthday, August 18, 2013. For information, please email [email protected].

Jack and I have known Gunnar for many years. We always thought highly of him as he was the kindest sweetest person you would ever know. Always cheerful, outgoing and HELPFUL. Gunnar would do any thing for anyone. He loved his family and was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and yes a wonderful friend. Gunnar we'll always remember you. Our deepest sympathy to the family for their great loss.
