Wished I could remember the year I bought Old No. 1' I guess it was in 1976. Since the day I put that piece of vinyl on the turntable, my whole outlook and attitude to music and life has changed.
All the music - and all the life - that followed, was shaped by that one moment.
Vale Guy, and thanks a little piece of my life has gone with you, but your beautiful legacy remains with us, forever.

The morning of Guy Clark's passing Homer Wills posted this great photo of Guy and Townes Van Zandt, along with the post, "Therel'll be a crap game up there tonight" to which I replied "Pitchin' quarters against Heavens Gate"
Well, if I've learned one thing from listening to Guy and other great songwriters over the years. it is this. Never deny your muse.
This was the result of that picture and those who reflected on it.

I'm so saddened to hear of Guy Clark's passing. Clark's music has been a part of my life for such a long time that it feels like a member of my own family has gone to the other side. Guy Clark's songs have touched me like no other music artist. May his family find comfort in that Guy is no longer suffering and that his music meant so much more than anyone will ever know.

My condolences to his family and close friends. I know Guy had many friends through his music, I was one. My family was firmly from Monahans, I was born in Odessa because Monahans didn't have a hospital back then. When I was a teen in the 70'she had moved to a farm outside Burnet,(outside Austin) and I was learning Guy's music through Jerry Jeff, my grandmother realized I was talking about someone whose mother and family she had known, Monahans never being a large town. She related stories of Guy's mother, etc and we listened to the music together.
I'm 56 now, my folks are gone, but the multi-generational Texas tie I have always felt for Guy Clark is blood deep. I took my two sons to his 70th birthday party show here in Austin, so they would see him for themselves, to carry on what's important. Guy always wrote of things important, maybe using a watermelon rind for second base or squashing a penny on the train tracks.
Good to know he's with Susannah and Townes; they knew he was coming.
Sorry he's no longer here in the flesh, but we all know he'll forever remain in his legacy. He is sorely missed.

As much as you can know a person through his thoughts and words, Guy seemed like a wise big brother ~dispensing his measured wisdom with love, compassion and humor. My heart breaks for your family and the collective "all of us" who were touched by his brilliant, shining example of living life like each day was a precious gift to treasure. He was somethin' alright

Guy made really important contributions to music and he will be remembered by all country musicians.
Maybe there's something about the fascinating bleakness of west Texas (Monohans, where Guy was born) that develops the heart outreach that is embedded in his songs.

What a gift we have in Guy. For those who play his music, those who know it and those who get exposed to it by others. This is what will live on for so many. His words and music have inspired and comforted me more times then I can count. We will continue to play and share him in San Diego for years to come. The "Guy Clark Sessions" will be a special addition to our East County Brown Bag Lunch & Acoustic Jams. I am honored to be part of his music legacy - he will truly be missed. My love to all those he has touched and those that were the closest to him.

I loved Guy Clark's version of Steve Earle's "Fort Worth Blues." Each place mentioned in the song was a place I visited with my mom or dad, both of whom have now passed. I never met the man, and I never had the privilege to see him perform in person, but he touched my life as only a great artist can do.

What a hole Guy's death drills into the hearts of his admirers. I was in Houston in the '70's when we just took excellent musicians for granted, thanks to artists like Guy and Townes and so many others hanging around. One evening at the Texas Folk Life Festival I was privileged to witness Guy and many of the other performers having a private jam--you never heard such great music! We are losing these talented icons waaaay too fast.
Guy, you left many musical treasures for the world to enjoy. Thank you--and safe travels into the hereafter...

A list of Guy's songs I fell in love with would cascade down a page... And all the stories he ever told about those songs would illuminate them in a world color and character I longed to be part of. Even if only for that moment, before the notes and words drifted off into the night.
To know I got to see him play, and the memories of tunes like Let Him Roll and The Randall Knife make me feel very very privileged today.
A master, one of a kind, Guy Clark.

I cannot get through The Randall Knife without tearing up. The same goes for the last verse of Desperados Waiting for a Train. I was a fan the first time I heard him in 1976. I drove by the Texas Chili Parlor on Lavaca Street in Austin today and almost went in for a few mad dog margaritas, but didn't. Instead I just went to a nearby park and took a nap. Those days are long gone. Sadly now, so is Guy Clark.

I can cut through the years to the very night that I went over to the Texas Opra House over on Richmond and saw Gary P and the Lost Gonzo's open for him. It was his first show after the release of Old #1. "Let Him Roll" and roll he did. Boy that song still brings tears to my eyes

Saw Guy Clark at the Kerrville Folk Festival back in 1978 or 79, and he embodied all that was good and fine in Texas music. "Texas Cookin'" is a classic CD. His many other songs, like "Desperados Waiting for a Train", will endure.
Guy played Abilene in 2011; good to see him in concert again.
He was a poet whose melodies captured the small and great beauties in our lives, with lyrics original and authentic.
My sincere condolences to his family and friends.
Godspeed to Heaven, Guy Clark. Thank you for your gifts.
