H. Carley Obituary

Ed Carley, 68, of Colorado Springs, died on April 2, 2011, following a four-year battle with lung cancer. Ed is survived by his wife of 45 years, Mary E. Kersich Carley; his sons Michael Carley, M.D. (wife Janine), Dallas, TX; Donald Carley, Esq. (wife Patricia), Bloomington, IL; daughter Jeanne Kelmer (husband Dave), Edgewater, MD; and ten grandchildren. The son of Harold and Clara Carley, Ed was born in Syracuse and grew up in Delhi, NY. He graduated from Ithaca High School, Ithaca, NY; earned his bachelor's degree at Cornell University, Ithaca, NY; his master's at the University of Idaho, Moscow, ID; and his doctorate in Plant Pathology at the University of Minnesota, St. Paul, MN. Dr. Carley resided and raised his family in Chalfont, PA, during his 30-year employment with Rohm and Haas Company, Philadelphia, PA. While working in agricultural research and as a product development manager, he earned 11 United States Patents. Ed moved to Colorado Springs in 2001, where he spent the last ten years of his retirement. He enjoyed visits with his children and grandchildren, drives in his restored "little red car" (1963 MGB roadster), and worldwide travels. Ed was an avid vegetable and flower gardener who earned Grand Champion honors in horticulture at the El Paso County Fair; he was active as a Colorado Master Gardener. He was a member of Pikes Peak Flyfishers, and trout fishing in his float tube on North Catamount Reservoir was a favorite pastime. We will remember Ed as a loyal, caring husband, father, and friend. At his request, no services are planned. Donations in Ed Carley's memory may be made to support the Colorado State University Extension Master Gardeners, El Paso County. Please send donations to Pikes Peak Community Foundation, 730 North Nevada Avenue, Colorado Springs, CO 80903, Attn: Friends of Extension/Colorado Master Gardeners.
