H. Ver Steeg Obituary

Jim lived courageously for many years with multiple sclerosis, and though a life-long non-smoker, he died after a short battle with lung cancer. He went to be with his Lord on Thursday, October 1, 2009 with his family near his side. He married his wife, Barbara Wollum, in 1963. After completing his internship at Santa Clara County hospital Jim served a 20 year career in the Air Force. Their daughter, Linda, joined their family in 1972 while they were stationed at Lakenheath, England. Jim did his pre-med, medical school (AOA)) and radiology residency at the University of Minnesota. After a 20 year Air Force career Jim worked with the Colorado Springs Radiologists for 12 years. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church where he at one time sang in the choir and helped third graders with Bible memory. Jim was a devoted husband, a loving father and committed physician. He will be remembered for his warm smile, his encouraging nature, his generous spirit and faithful friendship. Jim leaves behind his devoted wife, Barbara; his daughter, Linda Hofschire, and son-in-law, Eric; his sister, Bonnie Halcomb (Rev. Dr. Michael); his brother, Dr. Bruce Ver Steeg (Joanie); his mother-in-law, Roberta Wollum, as well as several nieces and nephews and many friends. The family wishes to thank Sol Amor Hospice, Dr. Jonathan Weston and Dr. Wayne Gage for their care and support during Jim's illness and for all who encouraged us with notes, cards, prayers and practical acts of kindness. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, October 6, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 219 E. Bijou, Colorado Springs, CO, 80903. Reception will follow at the church. Private burial will be held at Evergreen Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Ver Steeg Endowment at First Presbyterian Church.

Grace and Peace. Karen and I treasure our memories of Jim. We often remember our last visit to Colorado Springs. We were encouraged by Jim. His smile is something we will never forget. He had penetrating questions that caused us to defend what and why we believed something. We feel fortunate to have known Jim. Barbara, we have and continue to pray for you, that God will comfort you. Trusting that God presence will be manifest in the days ahead. Our only regret is that we won't be able to come for the memorial service. All our love.

Our sincere and heartfelt condolences to all of you. Jim was the best brother-in-law I could ever hope for, and provided guidance and support in so many facets of my life. Things will not be the same without him. I will miss his beautiful, deep voice, and our many phone conversations. He was so courageous in his final battle. He will be missed and remembered by so many.

Jim and Barbara became great friends with my parents whilst in Mildenhall/ Lakenheath, UK. My parents treasured their friendship greatly and despite the distances involved over the last 37 years they all remained in touch and regularly spoke and wrote.

It was only in the last few years that my brother and I came to know Jim (and Barbara) in their own right. We hope that the friendship will continue to live on (as it has done over the last few years) with both Barbara and Linda/Eric. We are grateful to have such wonderful memories of our stay with the Ver Steegs in Colorado Springs in 2007.

Jim was a wonderful man. Courageous to deal with the MS over the years and maintain his independence to the greatest extent possible. Yet he always found the time to worry / care / take a great interest in others lives. With his deep interest in politics, current affairs, and family issues he was a fascinating person to talk to. He inspired me to be a better person; to forgive and forget; and to be grateful for everything in life. I personally owe him a lot.

I know the last days, weeks, and months must have been particularly hard on Jim and those closest to him. I'm sure that Barbara's continual loving care must have eased his suffering greatly and to have Barbara, Linda & Eric and family close to him must have been extremely comforting. We are grateful to the Lord for allowing him to pass away in his sleep, peacefully at home, with those closest to him.

With fondest love, and wonderful memories & thanks for allowing us to share in Jim's life,
The Broadwaters & Craigs, UK.
