Harlan Wand Obituary

September 25, 1924 - July 7, 2008 Harlan Arthur Wand fell into eternal sleep at 11:00 PM on Monday, July 7, 2008 at the Mercy Hospital in Janesville, Wisconsin. He was 83. His wife, Helen Pearl Wand, preceded him in death on June 11, 2005. He was retired from the United States Air Force and the U.S. Postal Service. Leaving to mourn this loss are his 2 sons: Ronald Joe (wife, Katherine) Wand of Westminster, Colorado and Norman Edmund Wand of Littleton, Colorado; his daughter: Sherrie Anita Kent (husband, Jim) of Huntsville, Texas; his 2 grandchildren: Jennifer Jo (husband, Michael) Baden and Jamie Lynne (husband, Scott) Davis, both of Henderson, Colorado; and 4 great-grandchildren: Matthew Scott Davis, Jadynn Lynne Davis, Lexi Gianna Baden and Gunnar Michael Baden, all of Henderson. He is also survived by his brothers; Armin Glen (wife, Wilma) Wand of Monroe, Wisconsin; Lawrence Sylvester Wand of Warren, Illinois, Preston "Midge" Wand of Warren, Illinois and his sisters: Darlene M. (husband, Edward) Weber of Pembrooke Pines Florida; Twila M. (husband, Robert) Krause of Janesville, Wisconsin; Evalena M. (husband, Howard) Catoe of Lancaster, South Carolina, and Rosalie Opal (Harvey) Garland of Freeport, Illinois. Harlan was the 3rd child of Joseph C. and Hilda Dorathea (Siegle) Wand. His brothers: Milo H. C. and Francis Lee and a sister: Laura Wand, all had preceded him in death. H.A. Wand was born on Thursday, September 25, 1924 at home in the Apple River Township of Jo Davis County, Illinois. He was united in marriage to Helen Pearl Cheek on June 2, 1950 in Austin, Texas. He entered the U.S. Army on June 5, 1943 at Camp Grant, Illinois and trained with the horse cavalry at Fort Riley, Kansas. After a brief time for farming in 1946, and some schooling with the U.S. Forestry School in Rhinelander, Wisconsin, Harlan entered the U.S. Army Air Force in July of 1947 and was chosen to serve in the Air Force back when the Army and Air Force split in 1947. After tours of duty in Korea, England, the Azores, India, Burma and China (and numerous bases in the United States), he retired from the U.S. Air Force on January 31, 1966. While serving with the armed forces of the United States, he was decorated with the Air Medal with one Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster, Distinguished Unit Citation, the Air Force Good Conduct Medal with one Silver Loop, the American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with 3 Bronze Service Stars, the World War II Victory Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Air Force Longevity Service Award Ribbon with 4 Oak Leaf Clusters, the USAF NCO Academy Graduate Ribbon, the Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon, and a Crew Member's Badge. Harlan was a member of The Retired Enlisted Association and the National Association of Letter Carriers, No. 204; he was a charter member of Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church and the Holiday Ramblers Recreational Vehicle Club. He served for many years as a leader of the Cub Scouts, Webelos, and the Boy Scouts of America. A Prayer Service will be held at 1:00 PM on Sunday, July 13, 2008 at the Shrine of Remembrance "America the Beautiful" Chapel. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, July 14, 2008 at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church, 1318 N. Circle Drive, Colorado Springs. Interment with military honors with follow at Evergreen Cemetery. A luncheon reception will then be held in the Fireside Room of Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church. Memorials in his memory may be made to the Boy Scouts of America, 1325 W. Walnut Hill Lane, Irvin, Texas 75038 or to Boys Town, P.O. Box 6000, Boys Town, Nebraska 68010. Blessed be his memory.
