Harold Michaelis Obituary

Harold Michaelis was born on the family farm in Barton County, Kansas, August 31, 1920 to Mary and Emanuel Michaelis and passed away peacefully December 16, 2010. He was the second youngest of one brother and seven sisters. He owned and operated a country store in Susank, Kansas until his induction into the Army Air Corp during World War II. Stationed in England for three years he returned after the European war ended and married Alice DeWald in Russell, Kansas, August 26, 1945. The couple then moved to Colorado Springs the same year where Harold and his brother opened the Michaelis Drive-Inn in Manitou Springs, Colorado. Harold shortly thereafter bought his brother's interest in the drive-inn and subsequently opened and operated four Michaelis Drive-Inns in Colorado Springs. Harold had been written up and was the feature cover story for two national restaurant magazines. His drive-inns were known for the “Home of the 10-cent Hamburger, “Burger in the Basket, the “Big M Burger and the “Flying Saucer Sandwich. Harold remained active in the restaurant business until 1976. He then continued business activities in various areas of real estate, apartments and Kansas farming. Harold was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church for 65 years and had continued to call Colorado Springs home. Their daughter Carol Ann preceded Harold in death in 1989. Mourning his passing are his wife of 65 years, Alice, their children Stanley (Mary) and Ruth along with seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, two sisters and numerous nieces and nephews.

To the Michaelis Family, I am so sorry for your loss, but know that Carol and her dad are celebrating in Heaven. Carol and I were good friends and classmates for 3 years at Immanuel and we continued to keep in touch in later years. Mr. Michaelis was so good to us girls as he always had that sunny smile even after hours of work. He and his wife worked many hours with school projects and programs and the times I spent with them, I still remember with a warm feeling, knowing there are people like this in the world. God bless and let's all keep smiling for him. We will all be reunited one day and we live for being with them and our heavenly Father.
