Harold Williams Obituary

Harold "HW" Williams, born July 19, 1921, peacefully departed this life September 27, 2008. First born of Alice and Leonard Williams. HW was born in a sod house in Thomas County, Kansas. His family moved to Colorado Springs in 1936 where he attended Christian School. HW is survived by his loving wife, Phyllis; sons, Ron, Larry (Marcia) and Scott Williams and daughter, Tracey Williams; stepchildren, Mark (Joy), Gary (Donna), Jay (Moe), Ernster; siblings, Wayne (Gladys), Maxine Wendt, Lloyd (Joan) Williams, (both deceased), and Shirley Carson. HW also leaves behind many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. An avid hiker, his last climb to the top of Pikes Peak was when he was 75. He loved his daily walks in the Garden of the Gods, flying his planes, golfing, camping with friends and family and motorcycling with his sons and buddies. In the latter years, he and Phyllis enjoyed wintering in Texas with friends doing lots of golfing and fishing. HW championed and supported his children and stepchildren with great enthusiasm and generosity. HW worked for the City of Colorado Springs as a Street Department foreman for many years before founding and operating El Paso Asphalt Repair for the next 20 years. After retirement, he continued to work with his sons in their companies. For many years he was an active member of Cheyenne Mountain Lion's Club, Eagle 8's Square Dance Club, Masonic Order, Motorcycle Trail Rider's Club, Motorcycle Trails Organization, and past member of First Christian Church. Although we will miss his presence, we have been blessed to be a part of his life. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the charity of your choice.

My grand father was the greatest man I ever knew. He was always there for me and always let me know he was thinking of me and praying for me. He will be greatly missed. I wish that I would have had the chance to tell him before he passed that he had a new great grandaughter. Life without him will never be the same.

Mr. Williams was a great role model and man that deeply affected my life. He gave my siblings, mother and me opportunities we would not have otherwised experienced. My fondest memories are of camping trips, motorcycle rides, gathering firewood for the winter and long discussions on how to solve challenges of our human conditions. His attributes are selflessness, optimism and compassion. He was always building things for his children and the neighborhood kids to keep us entertained, physically fit and out of trouble. I have a humorous story to share....
It was a couple of days after New Years Eve, 1976, my mother and I were cooking dinner and we heard what sounded like someone blowing a New Years Eve horn. I checked outside and inside the house and found nothing. A few days later as mom and I were cooking dinner we heard it again. This time we thought it was coming from the garage or crawlspace. Mom asked me to go get Mr. Williams to help us find the culprit. He immediately came over and when we went downstairs, he pulled out a gun from his waist belt. He painstakingly secured the perimeter of our home. Nothing was amiss. A couple of days later my brother was home and as mom and I were preparing dinner, we heard the sound again. My brother finally located the source, a smoke alarm detector that had been recently installed. So much for the New Year's Hooter. I was extremely embarrassed to tell Mr. Williams the outcome and his response was a reflection of his true nature, relief and hilarity.
I know that his soul and spirit will live on through all of us who have had the fortune to know him. May the Williams Family be embraced with Peace, Love, Laughter and Harmony !!
