Harriet Brooks Obituary

Harriet Brooks has passed away at the age of 87 at her home in Colorado Springs. She was born in Pueblo, Colorado to Helen and William Goodman, immigrants from Hungary.

As a child, Harriet displayed an early interest in music. After graduating from Centennial High School in Pueblo, she studied voice and piano at Julliard in New York and became an opera singer. She also attended Colorado College and graduated from Russell Sage College with a degree in sociology.

Harriet Ray Goodman married Walter Brooks in 1948 and they enjoyed 62 years together living in New York, Pueblo and Colorado Springs. Harriet was a social worker in Pueblo and then worked with her husband in the homebuilding and real estate business for many years while also doing extensive volunteer work. Harriet was president of the local chapter of Hadassah, served on the executive board of the National Council of Jewish Women, was a founder of the Colorado Springs Mental Health Association and was vice president for the League of Women Voters.

Harriet and her husband supported Colorado College as founders of the Friends of Tutt Library and founding board members for the Southwest Studies Program. At UCCS they established the Walter and Harriet Brooks Scholarship Foundation.

She is survived by her children Mark (Terry Samuel) Brooks and Judy (Lee) Frank and three grandchildren, Asher Frank and Aaron and Estee Brooks.

Graveside services will be held on Sunday, September 7, 11 AM at Sons of Israel/Evergreen Cemetery, 1005 South Hancock Ave., Colorado Springs, CO 80903. Following the funeral a reception will be held at MacKenzie Place Cottage, 1504 Lewis Ridge View, Colorado Springs, CO 80907.

Our deepest sympathies to the Brooks family. Walter & Harriet employed my father and mother, Harold and Evelyn Long, as managers of several houses in the downtown area during the 1980's. After my folks moved away, then came back to live with us, the Brooks' came faithfully before every Thanksgiving with a turkey or ham for our family. We were very appreciative of their kindness and enjoyed our yearly visits very much. My mother is still living and at 99 years of age, was very saddened to learn of Harriet's passing. May God bless the Brooks family during this time.

I met Walter & Harriet many years ago thru our mutual involvement in real estate. We kept in touch for some time, mostly thru her very funny letters. I was in awe of her energy & involvement in so many activities. She was especially proud of the accomplishments of her children and a lovely lady.
