Hazel Goddard Obituary

Former Colorado Springs resident, Hazel Goddard died at peace with family present February 11, 2011, on Hilton Head Island, SC, of congestive heart failure. She was 98 years old. Born August 17, 1912, in Mineral, IL, Hazel graduated from Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, IL, Judson College in Elgin, IL, and Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, IL. Hazel's life reflected her love of and service to God as she used her talents as a missionary, author, editor, and psychologist. In the 1940s she was a founder of Young Life, an organization she remained associated with throughout her life. She began counseling in the 1960s first in Illinois at the Warrenville Clinic then in Colorado when, at the age of 63, she founded Christian Counseling Ministries and was a pioneer in "Intensive Counseling". She retired from CCM at the age of 94 when she moved to Hilton Head to be near her daughter and son-in-law. The recipient of many honors and awards, Dr. Goddard always credited God for working through her. She especially treasured being named an Unsung Hero of Oklahoma City for her work counseling surviving family members of the Murrah Federal Building Bombing. Married for 62 years to Dr. J. Howard Goddard a professor at Wheaton College (deceased) Hazel's children are David Goddard and wife, Linda, Colorado Springs, CO and Joan Maute and husband, Mark, Hilton Head Island, SC. She is also survived by six grandchildren and four great grandchildren. There will be a memorial service for Dr. Goddard at TidePointe, Hilton Head Island, SC on Saturday, February 19 at 2:00 pm. A memorial service will be held in Buena Vista, CO May 15. Dr. Goddard's interment at the cemetery in Buena Vista will be a private family ceremony. Hazel is my Grandmother(My Gammy). She was an incredible woman and our family will miss her so! She always had a love for convertible cars and loved having the top down. Now she is forever crusing the clouds "topless" in Heaven!
