Helen Augustyn Obituary

Helen (Halina Kowalewska) Augustyn, age 85, died May 18, 2012 in Oak Hill, Florida where she had been living for the past one and one half years after having been a resident of Colorado Springs since 1969. She was born in 1927 in Gielczyn, Poland. In 1940 her family of nine was forcibly deported to Saluga concentration camp at Arkhangel'sk in Siberia, Russia. Upon their release they traveled through Middle Eastern countries to thankfully arrive in India and eventually immigrate to the United States of America in 1950. She recently received a Polish Cross of recognition for having survived the atrocities of Siberia. Hundreds of displaced Poles continue to reunite annually in celebration of their survival. Her sister Teresa, five children, ten grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren survive her. We, her children, would like to recognize her dear friend Richard Bush, her doctors Dr. Deborah Jalowiec, MD, Muni Setty, MD for their care and compassion and the Halifax Health Hospice of Volusia / Flagler in Edgewater, FL for their genuine concern and care. She will be remembered as a passionate cook and baker, masterful gardener and loving mother. A memorial service will be held July 14, 2012 in Colorado Springs.
