HELEN RHODES McKELLAR
June 5, 1923
March 17, 2020
Helen Rhodes McKellar passed away March 17, 2020 after enjoying life for almost 97 years. She was born in Golden Lake, Arkansas on June 5, 1923 and raised in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Helen attended the University of Arkansas and graduated from the University of North Carolina. In 1944 she married Alden "Mac" McKellar and after a few years of Marine Corps life, they moved to Mexico where they lived in Mexico City, Sabinas, Coahuila and on the family ranch. Thirty-five years later, they moved to Colorado Springs to enjoy the mountains. Alden and Helen enjoyed spending summers at their cabin near Creede, Colorado. Helen was an avid reader, enjoyed bridge, played the piano and organ, was an excellent cook and seamstress plus knitted sweaters, dresses, shawls, blankets and anything else to keep her friends and family warm. She also knitted outfits for premature babies at the hospital and volunteered at the Manitou Springs Library.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband, parents Bob and Elizabeth Rhodes and siblings Robert and Betty. She is survived by her children Andy McKellar, Elizabeth Morris and Cathy Hegewald; grandchildren Carolyn Godavitarne, Scott Morris, Jeffrey Hegewald and John McKellar plus great grandchildren Alex and Emma Godavitarne, Jack and Max Morris and Hazel and Ben Hegewald.
Services will be held on Sunday, June 6, 3 PM at the Chapel of our Savior Columbarium, 8 Fourth St, Colorado Springs, Colorado, 80906. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be set to Grace and St. Stephens Episcopal Church, 601-631 N. Tejon St. Colorado Springs, CO, 80903.

I volunteered with Helen at the Friends of the Manitou Carnegie Library. She was always a fun person with great conversation! She loved reading and had a wonderful way of thinking about her books, her life, and using her experience to advise us younger folks on what we might try next! Her passing makes the world a little less bright. Deepest condolences to the family. You are so lucky to have had her for all these years!
Jean Lewis Gabardi, Manitou resident.
