Helen Neavill Obituary

Our beloved Grandma Jane entered this world on November 13, 1921, as Helen Jane Oelschalger, the daughter of two Cleveland, Ohio dentists. She left this world, much too soon, on July 31, 2011, as Helen Jane Neavill, wife of James C. Neavill (Jim) Neavill, sister of three, mother of eight, grandmother of seventeen, and great-grandmother of seventeen. Above all else, Jane lived for and loved her family. Over the course of her over 89 years, Jane led a life of vitality and variety. Jane was a dental hygienist, went to secretarial school, and worked for the Colorado Springs Department of Social Services. Jane was working there when she and her husband, Jim, met. Jane and Jim were married on December 31, 1974 in Reno, Nevada. Prior to her marriage to Jim, Jane traveled and visited with her eight children throughout the U.S. After their marriage she extended her travels internationally. Jane and Jim lived in Malaysia and from there traveled to Singapore, Australia, and New Zealand. During this time Jane began her amazing elephant collection, and learned to make the curry dished her family would savor for years to come. But Jane's cooking skills went far beyond curry. Jane's homemade bread rolls, which she continued to make through July of this year, were as good as currency among family and friends lucky enough to receive them at the home or in a care package. Her family remembers her with a wooden spoon in her hand, flour on her apron, and wonderful aromas coming from the stove and oven. Her recipe collection will be passed down, but her dishes will never be duplicated. Jane had an amazing sense of humor with mischievous twinkle in her eye and infectious laugh. She was strong and active, and always up for a challenge. Jane loved the Colorado mountains and climbed Pikes Peak at the age of 50. And while she had a lifelong fear of water, she once stood in the waves of the South China Sea. Jane played softball, was a champion bowler (known to bowl a 200+), a square dancer, and could tell you every football and baseball team, player, and coach. Jane looked forward to and appreciated the visits and calls from loved onces. She always had stories to tell and bits of experience to share. Her favorite color was yellow, the color of sunshine, which is what Jane was in our lives. Family and friends will be forever reminded of Jane by her beautiful and creative ceramics, her garden, her collections of elephants and chickens, as well as every time they see the Colorado Rocky Mountains. Helen Jane Neavill was predeceased by her son, Robert Becker, her daughter, Eileen Nelson, and her sisters, Rosemary Paul, and Marjorie Oelschlager. She is lovingly remembered by her husband, Jim Neavill, sister, Jacky Griggs, daughter, Sandy Vrettos, son, Bruce Becker, daughter, Jacky Thornton, daughter, Marjorie Pape, daughter, Ann Clare, son Brian Becker, seventeen grand-children, and seventeen great-grandchildren. She was an unbelievably strong and incredible woman, and through her actions taught us all the meaning of love and family. Services will be at Cappadona's Funeral Home in Colorado Springs on Thursday, August 4 at 11:00 a.m.,1020 E. Fillmore St, followed by a family only graveside service.

You worked your fingers to the bone
The sacrifice was great,
For raising children is a chore and you engendered eight,
Through sleepless nights, though worry worn, you kept a constant vigil.

And every child would leave a mark with line and weight and tow,
That only parents with loving hearts will truly every know.

As each year passes and memories fade I never will forget to honor you on Mother's day, with prayer, and thanks, and debt.

When I was just a boy about the age of four my mother gave a gift to me
A brand new rocking chair leather bound with care my mother gave that chair to me.
It sat beside my bed embroidered with leather thread was a horse that all could see and I would rock each night to my hearts delight until I would crawl in bed to sleep.
I think my mother knew the things that mothers do about their children and their needs.
So when she sat me there in that rocking chair my mother said these words to me.
"You'll find some comfort here in this your rocking chair where you can dream of things to come and if the world's unfair you'll have your rocking chair to remind you of where you came from."
So I rocked at night to my hearts delight. Oh how I loved that rocking chair.
She lived till Eighty-Nine and like the finest of wine she aged with grace and dignity. And I still see her there in that rocking chair a gift that's always stayed with me.
You will find some comfort there in this your rocking chair. It's a place where you'll be free. And if the world don't care you'll have your rocking chair to remind you how much you meant to me. So I rock each night you know my Mom was right. How I love that rocking chair.

God looked around His garden and found an empty place.
He then looked down upon His earth and saw your loving face.He put His arms around you and lifted you to rest. His Garden must be beautiful, He only takes the best. You've left us precious memories, your love will be our guide, You live on through your children, you're always by our side. It broke our hearts to lose you, but you did not go alone. For part of us went with you on the day God called you home.

I miss you

To my loving grandma, thank you for always making sure our needs were met as children. Thank you for my banana cream pie on my birthday, our fishing trips to Rainbow Falls, the drives to see the aspen trees change in late September, for bringing us back to Colorado Springs and giving us a home to grow up in. It's funny how much of you I see in myself: neither of us could back up a vehicle without hitting something nor park straight, our competitiveness, humor, compassion, and true orange and blue loyalty to our Denver Broncos...I will miss you. Please say hi to mom for us.

My sincerest condolences to Jim and ALL of Jane's family, you are truly a Living Legacy. As I told Jacky and Brian today following the beautiful Memorial Service you, her family gave the most generous of parting gifts, you brought her home to pass w/dignity from your arms to His in the comfort of her own home. May all of you take comfort in that and always keep that "infectious laugh" close to your hearts. My Love to all, Patty
