Helen Zallar Obituary

Helen F. (Llesmin) Zallar, 83, unexpectedly passed away on Friday, January 9th, 2009. She was born on December 21, 1925; daughter of Michel and Elizabeth Francis of Albuquerque, NM. She attended Adam's State College in Alamosa, CO, where she met the love of her life, Albert. When Albert was called to serve his country in WWII, Helen transferred to New Mexico Highlands University in Las Vegas, NM and earned a degree in Education. While at NMHU, Helen taught Spanish as she had a wonderful gift for learning and speaking foreign languages. Once Al returned safely from WWII, they were married on November 4, 1945 and eventually settled in Albuquerque, where they raised a family until moving to Canon City, in 1955. In 1964, the family moved to Colorado Springs, where she spent the rest of her life raising her family and managing family-owned businesses, Blue Mesa Indian Jewelry Company, and Tri-Gem International Diamond Company. Preceding her in death were her beloved husband, Albert, her parents, and her only sister, Betty Jo. Helen is survived by her five children: a daughter, Betty Anne Hipp, and four sons, David, Ray, Randy, and Gary; 10 grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. Helen was kind, generous, caring, and personable. She always had a friendly smile and an entertaining story for everyone with whom she came in contact. She was a devoted wife and mother who always sacrificed for her family and friends. She truly never knew a stranger, and was always the first person to help those who were in need. We loved her dearly. Visitation Wednesday, January 14, 2009, 5pm - 7pm with a Vigil Service beginning at 7:00pm at the Shrine of Remembrance Chapel, 1730 E. Fountain Blvd. Mass of the Christian Burial 10:00am Thursday, January 15, 2009 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 3122 Poinsetta Drive. Entombment to follow at Shrine of Remembrance. In lieu of flowers, personal donations can be made to Kids Crossing, 1440 E. Fountain Blvd., Colorado Springs, CO 80910 or to Rocky Mountain PACE, 2335 Robinson Street, Colorado Springs, CO 80904.

Helen was a participant in our PACE program starting in December. At that time, our program was brand new and she was one of the first participants enrolled. She regularly participated in our activity program and made many fast friends here. Our staff loved her, too. She was smart, funny, kind and very caring. Our other participants found her to be a source of friendship and an inspiration to them. We celebrated her birthday here on December 22nd. I asked her what she wanted for her birthday and her answer was, "I just want to be able to walk again." Two days before she passed away, I saw her up on her walker moving independently across the physical therapy room. It was an awesome feeling! As you can tell, we already miss her very much.
