Herb Hunt passed away peacefully at home with his daughter Pam and best friend and son-in-law Rob holding his hands. He was 93. Herb was born at home on a cotton farm in Jones, Louisiana to Bennie B. and Minnie (Foster) Hunt. In 1946, at age 18, Herb enlisted in the Army. He served his country honorably for 20 years with overseas tours that included Germany, Korea and Greenland. Herb retired from Fort Carson in July 1966.
It was on his first tour in Munich, Germany that he met the love of his life Josephine "Trixie" Wittmann. They were married on May 17, 1952, sharing 65 years together before his beloved Trixie passed away. Herb always liked to joke that he got to marry the same lady two times in one day, in a German civil ceremony and then by the military Chaplain. Together during his military career they shared many travels and adventures and discovered their love of square dance. A favorite memory was square dancing at the World's Fair in Brussels, Belgium in 1958, where they met past President Herbert Hoover. Eight days after military retirement Herb entered Kincade Barber College in Denver and then spent the next 42 years as the owner of Herb's Barber Shop in downtown Colorado Springs. He enjoyed every day of those years having fun, laughing and sharing jokes with the people who he considered friends not patrons. He loved his work and was always proud to introduce himself to the very end as "Herb the Barber." He retired in 2008 at the age of 81.
Herb was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church since 1966, El Paso Lodge #13, Al Kaly Shrine Club, a life member of Scottish Rite of Free Masonry (32nd degree), and longtime member of Al Kaly bowlers. He teased that he never bowled 300.
Surviving him are his son Mark (Andrea) Hunt, daughter Pamela (Robert) Hartman, grandchildren Sarah (Allen) Tutton, Brian (Caitlin) Hartman, Benjamin and Megan Hunt, and many beloved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Trixie, four brothers B.M., James, Benton, & Bevin Hunt, and two sisters Exa-Lee Smith and Myra Hunt.
One of his friends said it best, "The mantra of the modern world is that everyone can be replaced. How false that is. Herb Hunt can never be replaced. But the memories of his soft voice, friendly demeanor and million dollar smile will live forever in the hearts and minds of his family and legions of friends and customers." Herb would love for everyone to have a dip of ice cream and a glass of Pepsi in his honor, leaving you with this thought, "A bad day fishing is better than a good day at work." He loved you all.
Memorial Services will be held at Immanuel Lutheran Church 846 E. Pikes Peak Ave on Monday, October 25, 2021 at 1pm. Private burial at Pikes Peak National Cemetery. Memorial contributions in memory of Herb may be given to Shriners Hospitals for Children (donate.lovetotherescue.org) or Immanuel Lutheran Church.

I miss Herb. Regularly committing "herbicide" (getting your hair cut at Herb´s) is a great memory for those of us who worked downtown.

We were out of town and so sorry to hear of Herb's passing. Both Herb and Trixie are a treasured part of my youth. They were kind and generous neighbors and friends. Herb shared his interest in coin collecting with me throughout my childhood. Trixie baked cherry rolls that live on in my memory even today! All of my Middleton family members thank the Hunts for a shared past. We will keep you in our prayers.

"Herb the Barber" was a downtown institution. His shop on Colorado was the place to be to find out what was happening in Colorado Springs. . It wasn't unusual to have Mayor Isaac in his chair, and the DA and a couple of prominent bankers and businessmen waiting in chairs. Herb was soft spoken with southern charm and you were certain what was spoken at Herb's stayed at Herb's. He was one of a kind and will be long remembered and sorely missed.
