Herman Hoggenmiller Obituary

Herman "Happy" Hoggenmiller, age 88, a 25-year resident of Colorado Springs, passed away on February 20, 2016. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend.

Herman was born on May 23, 1927 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to the late Herman and Margarete (Banzhaf) Hoggenmiller. He graduated Northeast High School in Philadelphia in 1945. Upon graduation, he felt a sincere obligation to serve his country, and joined the United States Navy where he served on the U.S.S. Mississippi during WWII and other ships during the Korean War. He married Ilse Topel on May 3, 1958.

After his honorable discharge, Herman attended the Rising Sun School of Aeronautics in Philadelphia to learn to become an aircraft and engine mechanic. He was later employed with Piasecki Helicopters and retired after working for 36 years at Boeing-Vertol Helicopters.

He was a member of the American Legion and was a devout Catholic and member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Colorado Springs for 25 years. He loved reading, watching the news and reading the newspaper, and was especially interested in information of all kinds, especially history and current events. He and Ilse travelled extensively throughout the U.S. Above all, he cherished time with his family.

He is survived by his wife, Ilse; his children: Eric (Ann) Hoggenmiller, Edith (Gary) Snyder, and Diane (Rob) Schiller; his grandchildren: Cheryl (Richard) Turner, Jill (Ben) Gandy, Robert Schiller, and Kiersten Schiller; three great-grandchildren; several nephews and nieces, and his favorite puppy, Dutchess. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his sisters, Margaret Murphy and Judy Melia.

A visitation and vigil will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, February 28, 2016 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 6455 Brook Park Drive. A Rosary will be held on Monday at 10:00 a.m. with Mass beginning at 10:30 a.m. at St. Patrick Catholic Church. Interment will occur at a future date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in his name may be made to the St. Patrick Catholic Church Emergency Fund.

Herman was a sweet and warm soul. He always greeted me with kindness whenever I encountered him at a gathering at Edie's. Heaven gained a happy shiny angel and those here on earth are a little sadder for the loss his presence.

Edie and family,
Thank you for sharing your sweet dad with me for a short time. He was a light, and my favorite part of delivering meals each week! I felt blessed to know him! Many prayers for you and your family right now.

Fate or serendipity have a way of sneaking up on you. Call it what you will, I was fortunate enough to have come into this gentleman's company only a mere twenty plus years ago, wish it was earlier, wish I had spent more time with him as I'm sure we all do. Herman, will remain in my heart, love and memory forever. A very sad time to be sure. Let's all be like Happy Herman, grieve our sadness as appropriate then go out and make someone, or everyone a little happier every day, I think he'd like that.

Dad, I miss you so much! My heart aches knowing we didn't get out in time to Colorado to see you one more time. I know you were tired & it was your time to go home. Rest easy and I know you will be watching over us from above. And don't worry we'll take good care of Mom. Miss you and you may be gone but never to be forgotten. Forever in my heart

Dear Aunt Ilse, Edie, Eric, Diane, Cheryl, Gary and Rob,

We are very sorry for your loss. Uncle Herm was a great man and he will be missed.

I am sure my Mom, helped guide him into heaven. She was probably elated to have him arrive to celebrate her first birthday in heaven. They are now all together and reunited with our grandparents.

I wish I could go out to be with you. Unfortunately, I can not. We will all be with you in spirit.

Love, Maureen (Mosey), Ruthie and Nick (Nicky)
