Howard Shaw Obituary

Shaw III
HOWARD "CHIP" CHAPIN SHAW III
June 19, 1957 June 23, 2021
Chip Shaw of Manitou Springs passed away June 23 at age 64, peacefully, with loving support of hospice and family.
He is survived by his wife, Ann Wardlow Rodgers; children Howard Shaw IV, Daniel Rodgers, and Chloe Shaw Hallowell (Jack); parents Howard Shaw Jr (Peggy) and Joanne Harvey; brothers Ken Shaw (Ruth), and Norman Shaw; mother-in-law Doris Wardlow, brother-in-law Dan Wardlow (Joann), and many nieces and nephews.
Chip was born June 19, 1957, in Colorado Springs. His growing-up years were divided between Colorado Springs and Mt. Massive Lakes near Leadville where he gained a great love of the outdoors as a fine angler and spent countless hours hiking the mountains of Weston Pass, sometimes with bare feet.
He was a 1975 graduate of St. Mary's High School where he may be best remembered as an accomplished skier who led many adventures as president of the ski club.
He earned his Bachelors in Art Education from Colorado State University, and began a 40-year teaching career, starting with instructing young children at the Bemis School of Art, and later with pottery, jewelry, drawing, and painting at Cheyenne Mountain School District where he served as Arts Department Chair and as Head of the District's Fine Arts Department. He earned his Masters in Fine Art in Ceramics from Adams State University.
For many years, Chip was an on-site coordinator for the Marie Walsh Sharpe Foundation's prestigious summer programs for outstanding national high school artists. He served on the Board of the Arts, Business and Education Consortium. He was recognized as the Cheyenne Mountain District's Teacher of the Year and ABE Outstanding Teacher. He felt greatly rewarded by inspiring students through the "4 C's : Curiosity, Courage, Creativity, and Compassion." Even more, he was thrilled in discovering the difference he made throughout their lives as evidenced by many treasured letters from former students, particularly in this past year of his illness.
His greatest joy in life came in becoming a dad to Howard IV and Chloe.
He met Ann through the arts community in which they were both active and served on the Business of Art Center Board. They were married and joined families in 2003.
He loved gardening, hiking, fishing, and art. He found purpose in being a foster for rescue dogs and in volunteering for the Crossfire Ministries food pantry.
He was a generous man who supported many causes who will miss his help. His generosity reached out for the well-being of children, the poor, Native Americans, veterans and active military, animals, the environment, and mental health and suicide prevention. His local favorites include the Manitou Springs Volunteer Fire Department, Manitou Springs Community Congregational Church, and the Manitou Arts Center.
If you wish to make a memorial gift in his honor, choose a charity supporting one of these causes, or to support research for Chip's diagnosis, Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, see CUREPSP website www.psp.org .
A Celebration of Life is planned for Sunday, July 11, at 5 p.m. outdoors at Buffalo Bicycle Lodge, 2 El Paso Blvd. If possible, walk, carpool, or drop off.
Ashes will be spread at a later time at his old stomping grounds near Mt. Massive.
Manitou Arts Center will host a retrospective exhibit of Chip's lifetime as an artist, opening Sept. 3.

Chip was a champion for his students and colleagues. I always appreciated the passion he exhibited for his discipline and commitment to furthering the arts in all those he influenced. His shadow of influence will be experienced for many years by many people. I reflect back on all the occasions we had to just visit about life in general. His perspective was refreshing and I deeply appreciated our visits. Annie, I appreciate you for keeping me informed and the opportunity to communicate with Chip. Blessings to you and the family.

Mr.Shaw was a gentle nice person who did a great job teaching art and making time for his students, including me. I ate lunch in his classroom for four years. wouldn't have made it through 2005-2009 without the art environment he maintained.

Chloe and Chip,

Through his work, his commitment to art in all its forms, and the pride he justifiably took in you, Chip had a gift for "catching people at their best." And that is no small task. His encouragement of students to enter their work in the Scholastic Art program inspired me to do the same with my kids. And the light that came into students´ eyes when they asked, "You really think this is good enough?" is something I treasure. Your dad showed - and continues to show - me that.

"The shortest distance between two people is a story." Art in any form is story, and few people closed that distance with as much grace, humor, and dignity as your dad. Our lives are made better by his presence and his spirit, which endures.

Mr. Shaw was my favorite teacher at CMHS and a person who truly made impacts on numerous individual lives. He provided a safe space for students to freely express themselves without judgement. Mr. Shaw also inspired many to continue their passions with art, personally and professionally. I can remember being shocked when my college art courses were not as challenging or as free to thoughts and expressions (which only further highlighted Mr. Shaw's abilities as an art coach and instructor). He always invited art colleges to speak with us during the semester, furthering the notion that art is limitless and can become a profession. He always had the most kind eyes and way of pushing people to perform their best. Through support, guidance, and his personal rule (to never touch or manipulate someone's work, but to still be around to guide and provide examples). He always wanted US to figure out the solution or work though our artistic challenges. I remember the slide shows throughout the semester (and at the beginning) of former students' work, he used this to inspire us and show us and challenge our perspectives of art. I am thankful I took Mr. Shaw's courses at CMHS and also had the opportunity to visit his classroom after graduation and college. It was wonderful to see him and tell him all about my college experiences and where I was at the time. Mr. Shaw was a wonderful person on the physical realm, and I know he will continue to support and guide from the spirit realm. A great man and a great loss for the community. My thoughts and condolences are with all who knew, respected, and loved him. Thank you, Mr. Shaw, for all the impacts you made and for sharing your passions about art with the COS and Manitou communities. You will be greatly missed.

Chip and Ann have been our next door neighbors for many years. He loved working in the yard, taking walks, and enjoying life. Our hearts go out to Ann who has been taking care of him throughout his illness. She has been so strong. We will miss him very much. This photo is when they came and visited at Christmas with their new best friend Tiger who is also greatly missed. Our sympathies to all of Chip's family.
