Howard Smith Obituary

Howard P. Smith went to be with Patricia his beautiful wife in their heavenly home on June 4, 2014. Although he will be terribly missed by the many family members and friends he touched with his kind heart and generous spirit throughout his life. We are joyful in celebrating the reunion of two people so lovingly devoted to each other for over 59 years.

If Heaven reflects the abundance of flowers Howard took delight in giving his "Sweetie" during their earthly life, they are no doubt strolling through dazzling gardens now. She preceded him in death in 2009.

Howard is survived by his sister Evelyn Russell and several nieces and nephews in Bakersfield, CA. His six children Michaela (Dave) Datz, Howard (Lisa) Smith, Kim (Erik) Reid, Tracy (David) Goodman, Scott Smith, and Lori (Steve) Black as well as his 11 treasured grandchildren.

He was born in Bakersfield, California in 1929. In 1953 he met and married Patricia R. Powers and built their family as they embarked on a military journey. He served in the United States Air Force for 22 years before retiring with honors, and began his second career in 1974 as a Registered Nurse. He devoted the next 25 years of his life to protecting the lives of others and passing on his knowledge to the next generation of RNs in his typical flare for academia.

In the spirit of a man whom walked the world with gentleness and humanity we would like to wish everyone he leaves behind to (in his own words) "Persevere".

Memorial services will be held on June 9, 2014 at 2pm at Our Lady of the Pines Catholic Church with a reception to follow in the parish hall.
