Howard West Obituary

Howard "Larry " Lawrence
West
January 21, 1940
September 13, 2023

Howard Lawrence "Larry" West, a man of creative spirit, boundless love, and unwavering faith, passed away peacefully at his home on September 13, 2023. Born on January 21, 1940, in Willows, CA, to Howard Huckins West and Janice Louise Brenneman West, Larry was the youngest of three children, with two older sisters, Carleen Bessinger (deceased) and Jeri Priest.
Larry attended North High School before enlisting in the US Navy at the tender age of 17. Although his active duty was cut short due to the passing of his father, Larry continued to serve in the reserves for three additional years. His time in the Navy left an indelible mark on his character, and he remained a Navy man at heart for the rest of his life.
Over the years, Larry explored various career paths. He worked as a mechanic, an ambulance driver, a restaurant owner, and a professional residential and commercial painter. Despite the diversity of his professional pursuits, Larry's work ethic remained a constant. He was known for his dedication, selflessness, and the priority he placed on family. On the brink of celebrating 50 years of marriage, Larry's love for his wife, Sara Janis Volker West, fondly known as Jan, was a testament to his capacity for deep affection and commitment. Their love story was
one of mutual respect, shared laughter, and unwavering support. Together, they raised four children: Lana Magee (Terry), Lisa Munson (Todd Gilbert), Larry West Jr. (Gretchen), and Tabitha Butterworth (Dale). Larry was also a proud grandfather to Jessica, Brandon, Sara, Rylan, Emily, Megan, Jessey, Roman, Mikaela, Courtney, and Austin, and a great-grandfather to Huxlee, Haizen, Aldon, and Charlie.
Larry was a man of many talents and interests. He was a master woodworker with a scroll saw, an avid Bronco fan, and a lover of classic country music. He found joy in fishing, gardening, and working in his shop. Larry was also a cherished member of the Vanguard Church, where his faith and fellowship brought him immense comfort and joy.
Larry's infectious smile, hearty laugh, and readiness to lend a helping hand will be missed by all who knew him. He was a beacon of love and generosity, always willing to help those in need. His life was a testament to the values he held dear: hard work, selfless giving, and the importance of family.
A memorial service to celebrate Larry's life will be held at Vanguard Church on Tuesday, September 19th, 2023, at 10:00 am, with a reception to follow at the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Tunnels of Towers Foundation (t2t.org), an organization honoring America's First Responders, Veterans, and their families.
Larry's passing, following a brief yet aggressive battle with Alzheimer's, leaves a void that will never be filled. Yet, his legacy lives on in the hearts of those he loved and those who loved him. His life was a celebration of love, creativity, and faithfulness, and his memory will continue to inspire and guide us.
Rest in peace, Larry.
You will be dearly missed, but never forgotten.

Larry was all of the things listed in his memorial. What a kind man. He was so instrumental in helping Skip learn the woodworking craft.
He will be missed.
Condolences to the entire West family.
