Irene Key Obituary

Irene Key, known to many as Mother Key, a 16 year resident of Colorado Springs, passed away peacefully after years of illnesses. Irene was born in Richmond, Virginia to the late Mary (Jones) Brookins and Benjamin Brookins Sr. Irene was raised in Richmond and moved to New York City where she spent many years. She retired from the New York Department of Social Services Medicaid in 1995. In 1995, due to a serious illness her daughter brought her to Colorado Springs to live. She was reclaimed to Christ at Progressive C.O.G.I.C. where she became one of the Mothers of the church and was an active and faithful member until God called her home. She loved to cook, raise plants and give candy to the children. Irene was proceeded in death by her parents Mary and Benjamin Brookins Sr., her husband Augustine Key, one sister Bessie Lewis, two brothers Benjamin Brookins Jr. and Harold Brookins Sr. She is survived by her only daughter Frances Settles (William) of Colorado Springs, Two grandson's Rolondo Wilson (Wendy), of Bermuda, Janon Laster of Colorado Springs, one Great-grand daughter Andrea Wilson of Bermuda, one sister-in-law Virginia Wilkerson of Colorado Springs, a host of nieces, nephews, god-children and friends. Visitation will be held from 4:00 To 7:00PM. Thursday July 21, 2011 at Angelus Funeral Directors 1104 S. Circle Dr. Funeral Service 11:00AM Friday July 22, 2011 at Progressive Church of God in Christ, 930 S. Prospect St.

Sis Settles, I just want you know you and your family are in my prayers. Mother Key always gave me many words of wisdom. She was deeply loved by us and will indeed be greatly missed. Marenda Gardner,Jon-jon, MAdison and MJ.

Hi Frances and Bro. Settles. Mom and all of us are very saddened with the loss of Mother Key. She and Mom shared a very special relationship and Mo. treated us all with such love and support. We will continue to keep you and your family in prayer. It has is such a gift to have known her and we will always cherish the memories and the support and knowledge that she imparted to us. The entire family here and in Atlanta send you love, and blessings.
