Irving Howbert Obituary

Irving Howbert passed away peacefully at home in the presence of family members on 19th January 2014. Irving was born on May 9th 1916, the son of William and Mary Howbert. He was the grandson of Irving Howbert senior, one of the prominent pioneers in the early establishment of Colorado Springs. The family has been in the Pikes Peak Region for five generations.

Irving graduated from Yale law school in 1942 and entered the Navy that year serving as a Lieutenant until 1945. After the war, he became a member of the Haney law firm and practiced as an Attorney well into his later years. He was made an 'Honorary Life Member'of the Colorado Bar Association.

Like his father and grandfather, Irving contributed to many civic projects, serving as President of the Boys and Girls Club, Director of the First National Bank and President of the Community Chest.

Irving was a very engaged and devoted family man. He is survived by his loving wife and faithful friend of 20 years, Janet Ida Sample Howbert, and by his three children, Bill Howbert, Anne Bliss and Jani Cook, from his first marriage to Jane Drummond. He was much loved by all of his grand-children: Yarrow, Salal, Theo, Peter and Emily. Equally, he was a loving step-father to Jeanne and David, Wendy, John (Jock) and Sarah; and treasured step-grandfather to Sarah, Katy, Miriam, Anna and Danny. He will be missed by many, but his spirit of good humor, thoughtfulness, and generosity will live in many, for generations to come.

A Celebration of his life will be held in Grace and St. Stephens Church, corner of N. Tejon and E. Monument St. (parking in parking lot off alley), 2 PM Saturday February 22nd, followed by refreshments. The family wish to express their deepest gratitude for the exceptional care given by Pikes Peak Hospice.

Anyone wishing to make a gift in his memory in lieu of flowers may send it to Pikes Peak Hospice and Palliative Care. Contact can be made with Bill Howbert 719-964-6104.

I never got to meet Irving but I am married to one of his grandchildren, Peter, whom looked up to Irving in many ways. Peter has often spoken fondly of his memories of Irving and of all of Irvings wonderful, kind, compassionate ways. Many of these qualities I hear about Irving I see in my husband and I feel connected to Irving in this way. Through Peter, I see Irving was an honourable, kind, loyal man with a huge heart. I am so sorry I never got to meet him and so sorry to his/our family who no longer get to enjoy this beautiful man's company.

I knew Mr. Howbert from my days at The First National Bank and later Bank One. I loved hearing his stories on the history of Colorado Springs. Many times, Don Haney would join our conversations and what an added treat that was for a young woman who knew nothing of life to be in the presence of such wit and wisdom. What an honor for me to have known this smart, kind, gentle soul and a true gentleman. He now lights up the heavens. Blessings to the family.
