ISAAC "IKE" SANDERS PAYNE, IV
April 16, 1940 - October 19, 2018
He was born in TX, raised in Portland, OR. Ike entered the US AF Academy after attending Portland State. He was one of the first 3 Black Americans to graduate. They played pioneering roles in the integration of the Academy and were honored as the 'Pathfinders'. With a BS in Engineering Science, his career began with flying B-52s and 01's. Other assignments incl'd test pilot, commander, serving at Hdqrs USAF, weapons sys Chief of Ops. He retired to Albuquerque, NM as a Col. in 1987. His military decorations incl'd the Dist. Flying Cross & Purple Heart.
Ike enjoyed helping others and was active in charities and his hobbies (jazz, family ancestry, traveling, reading and history).
He is survived by two daughters & six grandchildren.
