Ivo Smith Obituary

Ivo Ray Smith, a longtime resident of Colorado Springs, died peacefully at his home on December 14, 2010. Ivo was born September 10, 1927 in Pretty Prairie, Kansas to the late Cary Smith and Mae (Barton) Smith, the eighth of nine children. He quickly found that humor could get him out of trouble as well as into it as the ornery little brother to his sisters. At 17, he joined the Merchant Marines, then the US Army. He finally found his calling as a photographer in the US Air Force. He served in Vietnam, and was known to write poetry under his bunk when they were under fire. He retired in 1969 and started his own business called Photo by Ivo. He took the newborn photos of thousands of babies born in Colorado Springs over several years, and was honored to be the wedding photographer for many couples in and around Colorado. He made friends easily, and throughout his 83 years, found that humor was an essential part of life. He leaves his wife of 53 years, Pamela (Briggs) Smith, his daughters Kelly (spouse Richard) Abbott, Tracy Smith and Gabrielle Smith, granddaughters Stefanie and Madeline Abbott of Colorado Springs, his sisters Peggy Williams, LaVon Leak and Rachel Borland of Washington and numerous other relatives. Ivo was preceded in death by his brothers Temple, Dale and Jewel, as well as sisters Freda Clayton and Beth Window. A memorial service will be held at Swan-Law Funeral Home at 501 N. Cascade Avenue in Colorado Springs on Saturday, January 8th at 3:00pm. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society in Ivo's name.

Aunt Babbie, Kelly, Tracy and Gabrielle, what a great guy Ivo was and is; I'll remember him for the rest of my life---always in good humor, very intelligent and a great story teller with an artistic flair. I still remember the beautiful movies he took of our family when you , Babbie, and Ivo came to visit us in California.
We just found a photo of Ivo and you with our baby Valerie. It was taken when Lori and I came to visit you in Colorado Springs. Ivo was smiling (of course) and wagging his finger at our newborn daughter. It's a great keepsake. God Bless Ivo and his family.

Aunt Pamela, Kelly, Tracy and Gabrielle,
I can't imagine going to our Smith Family Reunion next July and not having our Uncle Bud there to make us laugh and tell his great stories. Losing him is a tremendous loss to our entire family. He and Mother and Aunt Beth all arrived in Heaven about the same time and are having their own special reunion. We find comfort in knowing how much they loved all of us.

Aunt Pamela, Kelly, Tracy and Gabrielle,
I'll always remember Uncle Bud as a truly special uncle. When we were little and had family gatherings at Grandma Smiths' house, he'd entertain us for hours with magic shows, jokes and funny stories. His bedroom was "off limits" but we'd sneak in and look at his model airplanes and all kinds of interesting "stuff". Later when he was in the Merchant Marines and the Air Force, he'd send wonderful letters of his adventures and
gifts to G'Ma that were "exotic"(a Buhhda, a lama rug, etc) to most of us!
He's been a mainstay at our Smith Family Reunions. A few years ago, he receited a poem from memory - one our Mother (Freda) had written as a young girl. When I read it at her service this fall, I was so grateful Uncle Bud
remembered it and shared it with us.
We look forward to having all of you with us at the Lame Smith Family Reunion in July.
Love to all of you,
Cousin, Becky Belangy

To the family, I do not know any of you personally, but Ivo was the photographer at Eisenhower Hospital. I cherish the pictures he took of my 2 children from the beginning of their lives! He was a memorable person and I know he will be missed. Blessings to you all,

Dear Pamela, I missed you and your family when you left Germany. You and Ivo were so kind to us and I loved it when he would make me laugh. I never forgot your sweet and gentle way. What a loving family. You and the girls are in my prayers. I asked the Lord to keep Ivo's beautiful spirit busy taking pictures of the heavenly angels.

Dear Pamela, Kelly, Tracy, Gabrielle and family,

What a beautiful obituary. I've been blessed to get to know Kelly, Tracy, Gabrielle and the girls and know what a strong influence Ivo was in their lives. In getting to know them, it's apparent his daughters inherited their father's wonderful sense of humor.

In the coming weeks and months, the love and humor he shared with his family will be the strength you draw from each other.

All my love,
Jen Asher

Thank you, Kelly, for your e-mail that shared many sweet memories of your dad. I loved the 'love-letters-in-the-sand' picture of him, which depicted him as we (his nieces and nephews)remember him when we arrived on the family scene. His ever-present, hearty laugh and many stories endeared him to us, and we will miss him forever. HIS mission in life seemed to be to add humor to OUR lives, and he did it so well. Mission accomplished, Uncle Bud :)
