J. Reid Obituary

J Rowland Reid, M.D., age 93, passed away at home on February 29th while getting ready for work at Peak Vista Community Health Centers, where he had volunteered for the past twenty-two years. He was the oldest practicing physician in Colorado Springs. Born August 28, 1918 in Hagerstown, MD, he graduated from Bridgewater College and the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. After graduating, he served as an army physician with the 307th General Hospital during World War II. He was stationed in Japan where he married Judy St. Clair on April 12, 1946. After the war he completed his residency at the University of Michigan where he directed research that led to the discovery of the first drug to treat tuberculosis. In 1953 Rowland and Judy moved to Colorado Springs, where he practiced medicine for over 59 years, treating four generations of patients. He spent a lifetime caring for others. Rowland was preceded in death by his loving wife, Judy. He is survived by his brother, Paul Reid, his three daughters: Susan Stoddard (A.T.), Julie Adams (Rex), Becky Gilbert (Paul); by five grandchildren: Jonathan Stoddard (Lisa), Celeste Stoddard, Amy Stoddard, Elizabeth Gilbert, Jennifer Vogan (Eric); three great-grandchildren: Stephen and Adrian Vogan, and Molly Stoddard. All who knew Rowland will forever remember his quiet dignity and grace. A memorial service for Rowland will be held at Broadmoor Community Church, 315 Lake Avenue, on Saturday, March 10 at 1:00pm. In lieu of flowers memorial gifts may be made in his honor to Peak Vista Foundation or the American Diabetes Association.

Dear Susan, Julie, and Becky:

Your mother and father were incredible people. They treated me like their fourth daughter. I have so many fond memories of our childhood together. I remember our cooking ventures in the kitchen, our house of boxes, and the witch broom Susan rode when she ended up with a terrible break. No one every blamed me even though I think it was my idea. I still have the two Simpich angels that you're family gave to me because your mom knew how much I admired here collection. Our plays in the summer, our trips to the ENT Air Force Base dinners, and the wonderful hikes your dad took us on all the time.

Thank you for making my childhood so full of wonderful memories. I will always remember your father Dr. Reid as one of the kindest men I ever met. He has a wonderful soul.

Love to you all
