With heavy hearts, we announce that Dr. Jack Groat, aged 89, has peacefully passed away on December 31, 2024, having spent his final hours with three of his sons. Born in Los Angeles, California to Dr. Milton Jackson Groat and Bettie Siefert Groat (Lauder), Jack was raised in Pasadena and enjoyed a childhood filled with sports and outdoor adventures.
As a standout athlete, Jack excelled in track and football. After high school, he pursued his studies in biology at Stanford University, where he also played on the football and track teams. He continued his education at the College of Physicians and Surgeons in San Francisco, earning his Doctorate in Dental Science. Jack proudly served in the United States Navy for over 30 years, stationed in various locations including San Diego, the Philippines, Mare Island, and Okinawa, Japan. During the Vietnam War, he was deployed on the USS Oriskany.
Jack cherished his time in the Navy and the opportunities it provided for travel and new experiences. He achieved the rank of Captain and retired in 1992 in San Diego. In 1999, he moved to Monument, Colorado, where he continued to practice periodontics for several years.
A lifelong athlete, Jack competed in marathons and other road races well into his later years, passing his love for physical activity to his children. Whether running, camping, skiing, or shopping, Jack was always on the move.
Jack was deeply passionate about his family and faith. He worked tirelessly to provide for his children and took immense pride in their successes. His greatest joy was witnessing his children grow and thrive in their chosen paths.
Jack is survived by his loving family: Children and their spouses, David (Jaime), Brian (Kate), Sean (Julie), Steve (Terri), and Wendy (Adam). He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren: Dustin, Andrew, Tyler, Ashley, Aliesha, Andrew, Kayla, Emma, Annie, and Cal.
A service with full military honors will be held at Fort Logan at a later date. Jack will be forever missed, but our family takes comfort in knowing he is free to run again in Heaven.

May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow. Capt Groat and I were stationed together both on Mare Island and Okinawa. He and I reconnected a few years ago through Facebook. He was a good man.
