Jack Mason Obituary

Jack Clayborn Mason, cherished husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, died on Wednesday, May 25th.  He was 73 years old. Jack is survived by his wife of 38 years, Charlotte, his two sons, Stephen and John-Alex, his four grandchildren, Annabelle, Casey, Ruth and Sawyer, and his brother, Bob. A memorial service will be held at the Broadmoor Community Church, 315 Lake Avenue, Saturday, June 18th at 11am.  In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Jack's memory to the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region or Canine Companions for Independence. Jack lived and worked his entire life in Colorado Springs.  He graduated in the Class of 1955 from Colorado Springs High School.  Jack was an accomplished All-Star athlete competing in both hockey and baseball.  He attended Colorado College and graduated from Colorado State College. For nearly 10 years, Jack was a math teacher, coach and counselor at East and Irving Junior High Schools. In 1968 he joined Craddock Development Company as Vice-President, and was associated with the company for 18 years. He owned and operated several small businesses locally. As a young boy, Jack saw German POW's arriving at Camp Carson.  He developed an abiding interest in WWII history, and later in life walked the beaches of Normandy with his son, Stephen. As a 10-year old flower-hop for the Broadmoor Greenhouse, he delivered flowers to Julie Penrose on Christmas and Easter mornings and saved a 50-cent piece she gave him. He walked across the ice on the Broadmoor Lake.  He rode a grain shovel down the Manitou Incline. He struck out 17 batters in a single game.  He was the dealmaker.  He bought his parents a brand new car. He saw the Miracle at Michigan with his sons at his side, and for 37 years delighted them and countless other children on Christmas Eve as the neighborhood Santa Claus. He was a gifted storyteller. He loved old movies and musicals and listened to Mark Knopfler, the Bee Gees and Jimmy Buffet at volume 10+!  His favorite musician was his son, John-Alex. Among Jack's heroes were General Patton, Vince Lombardi and John Wooden.  He didn't put up with any “Mickey Mouse, though he was a little bit “Goofy. Jack was a steadfast and loving husband, an adoring and proud father and grandfather, a trusted friend and brother.  We will remember him for his unfailing kindness and generosity, his great wit and cleverness, his tremendous devotion to his family and friends, his dimples, his Cheshire grin, his love of big laughs, big storms, big waves, big rivers, and all dogs and children. He fought the good fight, he finished the race, he kept the faith. He will be profoundly missed.

I was so shocked to hear of Jack's passing. Jack was my second cousin. Like so many of us, we lost contact over the years. Jack and Bob were like big brothers to me and my four siblings after my parents moved here in 1948. We were so glad to see them again at my parents' funerals in 2007 and 2009. Jack mentioned at that time how proud he was of his family, and he brought me up to date on his sons and grandchildren. I will always remember that conversation, and the wonderful childhood memories he and Bob brought to our family. My sincere heartfelt condolences to Jack's family and to Bob.

To the Mason Family:

Jack was my customer when I worked for The Bank at Broadmoor. His first grandchild was born about the same time as mine. We shared photos and many memories. He was such a great person and he will be missed.
