Jack Rosen Obituary

Jack Rosen
PORTLAND -- Jack Rosen, who was widely recognized and known in Portland as the face of the Full Belly Deli, passed away on Sunday morning, Dec. 5, 2010.
The child of a tailor, Jack Rosen was born in 1934. He joined the Army with some of his best friends from Portland after he graduated from Portland High School in 1952. Jack worked as a cook when he was in the Army and enjoyed serving large groups of soldiers.
When he returned from military service, Jack continued to use his talents as a cook, preparing meals for large groups of people as a volunteer chef at Congregation Shaarey Tphiloh of Portland of which he was a member.
He and his son, David, used to cook together as volunteers for social events and religious occasions. They enjoyed working together so much and dreamed of opening a restaurant together.
For many years, Jack worked as a salesman for the Jayson Caron Company, but after the kosher style delicatessen owned by George Bress, called 'George's' closed down, there was a sad gap in the kosher style food map in Portland. The Rosen family decided that they would work together to open a kosher style deli, with pastrami sandwiches and all the cold cuts and delicious traditional kosher food one could imagine under one roof, so that kosher style food could be enjoyed once again by the masses in Maine.
George Bress, who had closed his deli because of a battle with cancer, gave his blessing to the Rosens before they opened the deli. The Rosens called their restaurant, 'the Full Belly Deli' and Jack Rosen's image, with a wide open mouth and busting belly biting into an overstuffed pastrami sandwich has served as the logo for the restaurant, since its opening on March 7, 1987. The restaurant continues to advertise itself as 'By George We're Good,' in memory of George Bress, who was an original.
The Full Belly Deli has served the same style of food but in different locations in Portland over the last two decades. The deli is currently located at the Pine Tree Shopping Center. It fills an important niche market for kosher style food in Portland, as the only kosher style deli in Maine, and has a special place in the hearts and stomachs of many Mainers who enjoy eating kosher style.
Jack was predeceased by his brothers, Robert Rosen of Portland and Norman Rosen of Lowell. Jack is survived by his wife of 51 years, Saralee Rosen; by his children, Karen Rosen Brenner and David Rosen; by his son- in-law, David Brenner, daughter- in-law, Arren Rosen; his granddaughters, Abby Rosen, Gracie Brenner and Shaylee Rosen; and also by his nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind his special cat Kitwit (aka Stormy) who will be cared for by his family.
The funeral will take place at Shaarey Tphiloh at 12 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2010. The family will sit Shiva at 17 Ridge Rd. in Westbrook, on Tuesday following the burial until 6 p.m., and on Wednesday from 3-6 p.m. Arrangements are by the Jewish Funeral Home, Portland.
Contributions in his memory
can be made to Congregation Shaarey Tphiloh.
