Jacqueline "Jackie" (Read) Barrilleaux, 96, passed away February 14, 2025, in Colorado Springs, Colorado. She was born September 10, 1928, in York, Nebraska to Josiah & Bessie (Lantz) Read, who preceded her in death.
Jackie graduated from York High School in 1946 and attended York College for two years. She taught school in Platte Center and Norfolk, NE, and then graduated from Colorado State College (now The University of Northern Colorado) in Greeley, CO. She then taught school in Portland Oregan before teaching in LaRochelle, France, where she met Junius "Jay" Barrilleaux.
Jackie married Lieutenant Barrilleaux on August 6, 1955, in LaRochelle France where Jay was serving in the US Army. They have two children, Jayne and Jim.
Jackie continued her teaching career in all the places Jay was stationed including Fort Lee, Virginia, York, Nebraska and Orleans, France as well as 20 years in Colorado Springs where she retired from District 49 in 1993. She was honored with the Jackie Barrilleaux Award which is given every year in her name to the top fifth graders at Stetson Elementary School.
Jackie thoroughly enjoyed her retirement dedicating her time to many organizations that support children. She was a docent at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, and actively volunteered at the Assistance League of Colorado Springs, Shrine Ladies, St. Paul's United Methodist Church, the Nile, Pikes Peak Club, PEO Chapter FT and two Red Hats groups. She loved making greeting cards with her card making group and loved to travel.
Jackie is survived by her daughter Jayne and husband John Gnadt of Daytona Beach Shores, Florida, her son Jim Barrilleaux of Austin, Texas, her devoted sister Janet Seeger as well as nieces and nephews and their families. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 54 years, Jay Barrilleaux.
Visitation will be Friday, February 21 from 3:00 pm- 5:00 pm at Swan Law Funeral Directors, 501 N. Cascade Ave., Colorado Springs. Funeral Services will be Saturday, February 22 at 11:00 am at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 2111 Carlton Ave., Colorado Springs. Interment will be Monday February 24 at 9:00 am, Fort Logan National Cemetery, Denver, Colorado.
Memorial contributions may be made in Jackie's name to the Assistance League of Colorado Springs or St. Paul's United Methodist Church of Colorado Springs.
