James Brown Obituary

James H. Brown of Colorado Springs passed away Wednesday, August 2,2006, under the care of Pikes Peak Hospice in Colorado Springs only a few weeks after being diagnosed with bone cancer. He was 84. James was born February 25, 1922, in Atlantic City, NJ, to Peter and Florence (Fleming) Brown. After graduating from East Orange High School, James enlisted in the U. S. Army to help his country during World War II. He served in then-segregated logistics units in Britain, France and Germany. After his honorable discharge, James settled in New York City where he studied art under WPA artist David Stone Martin. James met and married Clara Banks of New York City in 1946. James and Clara raised one daughter, Lynne, and a step-son, Robert. James and Clara lived in Brooklyn, NY, then moved to Denver, CO, in 1956. James worked as a graphic artist for the Air Force Finance and Accounting Center until his retirement. Both James and Clara served the community in many ways. They were active members of both NAACP and the Urban League. In later years, they served as members of the board at the Cadillac Condominiums in Denver. James and Clara were married 50 years when Clara passed away at their home in Denver in 1996. James moved to Colorado Springs in 2002 and enjoyed the nature walks in the University Park neighborhood where he was a familiar sight as the dignified gentleman who walked his two chihuahuas. Throughout his life, James had strong interests in art and history and in staying physically fit. His hobbies were reading, studying Spanish, jumping rope, and walking. James is survived by his sister, Katherine Douglase (of Willingboro, NJ), his daughter, Lynne Brown, (of Colorado Springs), his step-son, Robert Brown (of New York City) and his granddaughter, Kristen Kleinsorge, of Palm Bay, FL. A visitation will be Monday, August 7 from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. at Swan-Law and a memorial service will be held Tuesday, August 8 at 3:00 p.m. at Swan-Law Cascade Chapel. Interment will be at Fort Logan National Cemetery, Area B, on Wednesday, August 9 at 10:00 a.m.
