James Colvin Obituary

Jim, beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother passed away peacefully after a long battle with cancer and Parkinson's disease with his wife and family by his side, at home on July 24, 2015 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He was born in New York City on December 18, 1941, the first of four children to the late James and Hope Colvin.

Jim attended Trinity Pawling Preparatory School and was Head Prefect his senior year. While in college, he was president of his fraternity, DKE and captain of the football team. After graduation from Hamilton College, he served in the Navy during the Vietnam War commanding his own swift boats for 3 tours. Jim remained in the Navy Reserve and retired as a Captain in 1993. Jim graduated from University of Denver Law School with a JD and worked for the City of Colorado Springs, being appointed the City Attorney in 1981 and retiring in 1998.

After retirement, he was a consultant and a part time senior instructor in political science at University of Colorado, Colorado Springs. Serving on numerous boards, too many to list, Jim had a special fondness for Cheyenne Village and Cheyenne Mountain Zoo. He was an avid reader, loved the outdoors, road trips, his discussion groups and family get togethers. Jim hiked many of the Colorado fourteeners with his dogs, Sally and Maggie. He could be seen at all of his grandchildren's sporting events and school activities.

Jim was passionate about his family and seeing his grandchildren brought a twinkle to his eyes. Jim is survived by his loving and devoted wife Carolyn, children Michael Colvin (Melissa), Elizabeth Colvin Johnson (Dennis), stepsons Jeffrey Markewich, Robert Markewich (Morgan), grandchildren, Athena, Aurora, Hailey, Luke, Laura, Amelia, Frances, Jules, Clare and Abigail, siblings Donald Colvin, John Colvin and Jocelyn Colvin Wall as well as nieces and nephews especially Carey Leigh Stark.

The family so appreciates all the assistance and wonderful care given by Pikes Peak Hospice and Palliative Care during Jim's last week, especially his "Hospice Cypress Team".

A Celebration of Jim's Life will be held on Tuesday, July 28, 2015 at 10:30 AM at Swan Law Funeral Home, 501 N. Cascade Avenue, Colorado Springs.

Jim and I went to law school together. We locked ourselves in his apartment the week before the bar exam and crammed together. During the 80's our sons Michael and Nick played hockey together. I just learned of Jim's passing by reading the DU Law magazine. I am very saddened by Jim's passing. It was very nice to view all the wonderful photos of Jim and his family. My sincere condolences to Jim's family.. Frederic Stephens, Roseville, Minnesota

To the family of James Colvin, I am sorry for your loss. I graduated from UCCS in 2007 and had the honor of having James Colvin as a professor for a number of classes. What a great man who taught his students the art of being genuine, through his own character, something so many lessons forgo these days.

Jim was a beloved member of the Political Science Department at UCCS. For those of us blessed to be his colleague, he was a constant source of good advice and humor. For his students, no one had more insight into the practice of law or local government. His family is in our thoughts and prayers.

We always enjoyed our dinner dates with Jim and Carolyn. Those were special and fun times to reminisce and brag about grandchildren. We will greatly miss Jim's exciting stories, charming smile, sense of humor, but most of all genuine friendship.

Carolyn, our Sincere sympathy to you and the Family. Jim was such a pleasant person to be around! He always made us feel welcome when we came over for a cookout! He was a great cook as well! Love you and may God Bless you all!

Jim was a dear friend for 42 years. What a great guy to work for. We had
many arguments, but it's fair to say he was nearly always right, I think. I will
never forget all the wonderful hikes we had together and the many good times that Connie and I had with his extended family. Jim, I know you're up there running around in God's heaven. God bless. Jack and Connie Smith

"Papa" was a fixture at Luke's baseball games over the past few years. He was a very vocal and enthusiastic supporter of our teams. It was obvious how much he loved his grandchildren and enjoyed time spent with them. Our condolences to your family.

I knew Jim for a relatively short time
because of our participation in a group.
He was such a joy to know, fun, knowledgeable on so many subjects, just
an all-round good guy we all liked so
much.I am so sorry to hear of his death
and send my condolences to his family.
