James Dougherty Obituary

Jim Dougherty entered into heaven on May 28, after having a heart attack from which he never recovered. Jim was born and grew up in Garden City, KS; the first of four children born to Earl and Mabel Dougherty. In high school, Jim was the football quarterback on a team winning the high school state championship. He also played drums in a dance band. Jim married Linda Brown in 1964 and had three children; Teale, James Richard and Jamie. He had an early career in radio and television in Garden City, KS, Rocky Ford, CO, Pueblo, CO, and Colorado Springs, CO where he worked for KVOR, KRDO and KIIQ. In Colorado Springs, Jim married Sara Evans in 1973, and they had two children; Darin and Jacob. A career opportunity opened for Jim in Spokane, WA at KXXR. Eventually, Jim went into sales and won many top awards. After a second heart attack, Jim discovered a new interest in the medical field where he became an Invasive Cardiovascular Tech in Vancouver, WA. Jim loved this career as he was able to empathize and sympathize with patients as a heart patient himself.

Jim had a strong love of God, was a patriot and a political advocate. He loved to read, fish, work in his garden, listen to good music, and get together with his much loved friends and family. He was a quick and curious learner and knew how to do most anything, or would patiently "figure it out."

Jim is survived by wife Sara Dougherty, his sisters; Colleen Jackson, Maggie Hahn and Debra (Mark) Miller, his children; Teale (Rory) Kocher, Jamie (Kevin) Miller, Darin (Amy) Dougherty and Jacob (Raeann) Dougherty, and eight grandchildren. Jim is preceded in death by his parents and his son James Richard Dougherty.

A memorial will be held at 11:30am on June 19, 2015, New Heights East Church, 7913 NE 58th Ave, Vancouver, WA 98665.

To all of Jim's family - my deepest condolences to all of us who knew Jim. I was one of the many who knew Jim through working at Southwest's cath lab, laughed at his funny stories about himself, family, friends, and life. He will be missed.

Sara, Words can't begin to say what we feel. You and I bonded so quickly when we met at the Kairos retreat many years ago. When I met Jim, he made me feel so welcome in your home. I loved that man. He was truly Christ's servant to all those he met. The Lord must have loved him very much to call him home so quickly. We love you Sara and I'll be there as soon as you call.

Love,
Julie and Jerry Simpson

Sara, you and Jim have been my dear, dear friends since we met in bible study in 1974 in Colorado Springs. We were all "young" then with our new babies. Jim was an inspiration to me from the first time we met. I remember his playing the guitar! We've all been through so much together and now you and I are looking forward to heaven when we can be reunited with Jim & Jim! You and Jim have been there for me for 41 years. I will be there for you Sara for the rest of my life.

Sara and family, we are continually lifting you up in prayer. We are so saddened by Jim's passing. We have some wonderful memories of fun times visiting you two here in the beautiful NW. You both were excellent tour guides and fun to be with! We are so glad that we are here in town so we can be with you for the service. Love you! Nancy and Norman

Dear Sara, I am so saddened by Jim's passing and also the news of his daughter Jamie's death. Truly, your family has too much to deal with at present. Jim was such a pleasant and genial host when I visited in your home two years ago. I know it was a challenge, listening to our constant "cousin" chatter, but he was extremely patient, and I admired him greatly for it. Please know I am holding you and yours in my heart and prayers, and will continue to do so!
Love and hugs, Julie

Dearest Dougherty Family, my deepest condolences to all of you. I worked with Jim at Southwest for 10+ years. He was my preceptor, teacher, co-worker but mostly, friend. I have heard stories about all of you. It was always Jimmy (he hated me calling him that at first) who had the calm, steady hand to assist the doctor during the stressful times. I will miss him to pieces and feel very blessed to have had him in my life. Please know he loved his family very, very much. Peace to you, Amy Jean Rutherford
