James Doukas Obituary

James Doukas
January 4, 1935
July 22, 2023

Col James W Doukas, US Army retired, passed away in his home on July 22, 2023. Jim grew up in Falmouth, MA and was active in many high school sports and theater. He enlisted in the army and travelled the world. He married and had two children. With his natural leadership skills, he joined Officer Candidate School. After serving in Vietnam, he climbed the ranks, and later attended The War College. At the pinnacle of his career, he was promoted to Colonel and served as DivArty Commander at Fort Carson. After the passing of his first wife, he married Judy Abboud. For 25 years they enjoyed retirement together skiing, golfing, traveling, and socializing. Jim was an active member in the Eisenhower Men's Golf Assn at the US Air Force Academy, and served for many years on the Comstock Village HOA Board of Directors. After Judy's passing, Jim met Toni Sparks who became his partner and supported him to the end. They danced, dined, entertained, and travelled. He is survived by Toni, Bill Doukas (son), Mimi Doukas (daughter), and four grandchildren. He lived life to the fullest and will be greatly missed. A memorial service for Col. Doukas will be held at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church at 2650 Parish View (off Woodmen Rd.) on Saturday, August 5 at 12 noon.

COL Doukas was my hero! I served under him when he commanded 1-7 FA. A more professional, devoted, honest, and dependable man will never be found. The world has lost a treasure, but God has a new gunner in his midst. I remember when he chased me around the motor pool with a tanker´s bar when I played a little word game on him before a serious field evaluation. I remember when he spent countless months working to get me out of recruiting when he was in the 4th ID and we hadn´t spoken to each other in 5 years! I love that man and he was like a father to me.

I remember my dad, Brig. Gen. Don Hartung spoke fondly of his friend, Col. Jim Doukas, and I know they spent many a morning at Eisenhower Golf Course passing that dollar bill back and forth. My mom Joyce, and I, send our condolences to Toni, Bill, Mimi, and the family; we are profoundly sorry for your loss.
