James Eitel Obituary

James Michael Eitel took his last breath early in the morning of February 23, just a week following his 90th birthday. He had been surrounded by family members celebrating his life and went home to God in peace.

Jim grew up in Dubuque, IA and joined the US Army Air Force in 1944 where he was trained to be a tail gunner on a B-29. After the war, Jim obtained a bachelor's and master's degree at the University of Iowa. He was a teacher in Iowa, then in Colorado Springs. He later obtained a PHD from Nova University in Florida. He was known in Colorado Springs for his innovations in School District 11, where he served as elementary principal and then principal of Irving Jr. High and Sabin Jr. High. Teachers who worked with him recall his one rule for someone who might have an idea for a new program, always asking, "Is it good for kids?"

Jim is survived by his wife, Raynette, four children, Mike Eitel, Rebecca McCullough, T.J. Eitel, and Sue Eitel, three step-daughters, Risa Biggar, Shaunna Howat, and Krissa Ferguson. All twelve of his grandchildren mourn him greatly. His great-granddaughter will learn of him as she grows.

Jim lived eighteen years in Sun City Summerlin, Las Vegas, and was an active member of the golf clubs there. He loved worshipping at Mountain View Presbyterian Church and especially enveloping his thoughts in the beautiful music.

Friends near and far mourn this exceptional man, recalling his kindness toward all and his laughter which brought so much joy.

A memorial service will be postponed until a later date.

Donations may be made to Wounded Warriors or Shiner Hospital for Children.

I just learned about Mr. Eitel passing away today. I was watching a commercial on tv here in Colorado Springs. The commercial show some people cross country skiing. Which lead me to think of him. See Mr. Eitel was the principal at Sabin Junior High when I attended. One day he took all the Black students who were in the 8th grade to his cabin for the day. I can still picture that place in my mind now. He introduced us all to cross-country skiing because none of us had done that or even ski. Later we find different places to sit around the cabin and he asked us if any of the other students asked why he only took us. We of course said they did ask but they we didn't know why. I don't remember the entire conversation but I know he had to do with making sure we felt included and that he cared about us too. The school was predominantly white. We all left that day really appreciating him taking us there but more so he for showing us that he cared. He learned about us and we about him. I have shared this story about this wonderful man a few times. I have never forgotten. What an awesome impact he had on our lives. Being saved I know that I will see him in Heaven when it's time. You all as his family I'm sure are already very proud of him. I'm proud and blessed to have known him for that short time.

I attended Washington Irving Junior High while Mr Eitel was our principal. He was a wonderful person. He treated all of the students with respect. Rest in peace.

Can't say I worked with Jim because it was all for students. Outside of getting to be creative in teaching, camping trips, train trips and rafting with kids were just fun. God give Jim a gold star for his caring.
