James Gunn Obituary

James F. Gunn was born on December 7, 1942 in Ponca City, Oklahoma. He passed away February 22, 2010 at his home. He was 67 years old. James attended grade school through high school in Dodge City, Kansas, and received a bachelor's degree from Fort Hays State University in Kansas. For 38 years James worked for Santa Fe Railroad as a switchman, working out of Dodge City and Hutchinson, Kansas for 38 years. On retiring from the railroad, he moved to Colorado Springs, where he spent his time assisting his parents, driving them to appointments and different errands. James is survived by one daughter, Amanda, of McPherson, Kansas; and two sons: Michael of Hutchinson, Kansas and David of Chicago, Illinois. James was an outgoing person and was always ready to help neighbors, friends or relatives. This willingness caused him to be extremely liked by all who knew him. James is also survived by his parents, Jim and Dorothy Gunn of Colorado Springs, and three brothers: Randy, Steve, and Doug, all of Colorado Springs, and five grandchildren. A funeral will take place at 10:00 a.m. on February 26th at Shrine of Remembrance Funeral Home in Colorado Springs. There will be a visitation and memorial service at this time. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in James' name to Special Olympics Colorado, 384 Inverness Parkway, Suite 100, Englewood, CO 80112.

As a kid growing up in Dodge City, I knew James as either Jimmy or Peter---but especially Jimmy. He was very patient with me and my siblings and no trip to the Gunn's house would be complete without bugging him for some left-over car model parts. My condolences to the entire Gunn family and to anyone who never knew his wonderful spirit.

To Peter's family.....I am so saddened by your loss. "Peter" Gunn was a great addition to our class. Never an enemy, always a friend and never a dull moment. I remember him having a locker next to mine when we were freshmen. I kept getting little notes inside my locker signed "the Fang". It took me a long while to find that they were from Pete. He will be missed by many.

I never had the pleasure of meeting James, but his son Dave is one of the most amazing people I've ever known. It seems that his dad was a big part of how he got to be that way. My condolences on the Gunn family's loss.

Dave, Michael, Randy and family; It doesn't seem right that the world is without James Peter Gunn. There are theories to work on, perhaps something to fly, certainly something to think about long and oddly -- all missing now without him. Condolences to all of you, and thanks to Pete for always sharing. I'll miss him.
