James Hanson Obituary

JAMES P. HANSON
November 1, 1944 February 9, 2021
James P. Hanson, age 76 of Colorado Springs, CO, passed away on Tuesday, February 9, 2021. Jim was born on November 1, 1944 in Kenosha, WI, the son of Theodore E. and Josephine R. (Durand) Hanson. Upon graduation from Adams City High School, Jim continued his education at the University of Colorado and eventually graduated with degrees in Physical Education and Mathematics. He was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force, where he proudly served our country from 1967 to 1974, during the Vietnam War Era. During this time, he received orders to teach and coach wrestling at the United States Air Force Academy. After retiring active duty in 1974, Jim went on to serve in the U.S. Air Force Reserves as a U.S. Air Force Academy Liaison Officer. He also taught mathematics and coached wrestling in the Colorado public school system. After being promoted to the rank of Major, Jim retired from the Reserves in 1988, but continued teaching and coaching until his full retirement in 1995. On October 2, 2014, Jim was inducted as a University of Colorado Living Legend for his accomplishments as a wrestler. Jim was an outdoor enthusiast who enjoyed bicycling, jogging, hiking and camping. He loved photography and was known for the many beautiful photos he took over the years. Jim is survived by his two children, Pauline (Mark) Burger and Bret Hanson, all of Colorado; his two beloved granddaughters, Kristina and Alison; and three sisters, Linda Hanson, Jackie (Tom) Liebman, and Sue (Alan) Barry. He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Steven; and aunt, Mary Cornet. A Memorial Celebration of Life will take place this summer in Lakewood, Colorado. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association at www.alz.org/co. Please visit www.klaassenfuneralhome.com to sign Jim's online guestbook.
