James Mathers Obituary

Mathers
James Mathers

Jim Mathers passed away on April 21, 2018. A retired District 11 teacher who spent his entire career at Irving Junior High/Middle School, he was known by scores of students as Mr. Mathers or Coach. His favorite title, however, was Gramps. He adored his grandson, Will, and his tiny Yorkie, Button, and had many happy times with his daughter and son-in-law, Julie and Marc Hogan. Frequently, he would hop in the car and drive 1,000 miles to visit his family and friends, and he loved helping people plan road trips. That was the geography teacher in him. He will be missed for his big laugh, his regular phone calls with his sisters and his friends, and daily traditions he shared with his wife of 48 years, Kathy. A private memorial has been held.

I am so sad to be learning about this. Jim was such a kind and gentle friend, always there to lend a hand or offer words of encouragement. He was also a deeply respected and valued colleague, someone I learned from as well as shared with as a teacher and coach. I know that Kathy and his entire family will miss him and hope that many memories of happy times will bring them peace, joy and comfort to fill the emptiness. May he Rest In Peace.

It's hard to believe that I had class with Jim Mathers about 42 years ago at Washington Irving Junior High School. This Week is Teacher Appreciation and I can't think of a better person to recognize. Mr. Mathers was an incredible teacher and a mentor to being a successful individual. I remember when Mr. Mathers bought a home on my street and was a frequent walker and always found time to stop and have a friendly chat with my mother.
A story Mr. Mathers told me, but didn't talk about much was he had worked as a fireman on high speed steam locomotives for the Burlington Railroad as a young man. He said that his father and grandfather had worked for the Burlington Railroad as engineers and conductors. His grandfather was the first conductor of the luxury streamlined Burlington Zephyr passenger train. As a railfan I looked up to Mr. Mather and wondered why he hadn't followed a career in the railroad. Now I understand his calling was teaching. The loss of the Burlington Railroad was the gain of me and hundreds of students whose lives he helped shape.
To Mr. Mather's family I send my condolences and may the Lord comfort you at this time of sorrow. Thank you for caring and the memories Jim.

Mr. Mather's was a wonderful neighbor, always stopping to chat with my mom during his walks. My brothers and I always had him on our list of "favorite teachers ever!" Our condolences to his family and to his former students who have lost a childhood mentor.
