James Musselman Obituary

Musselman, Sr., James P.The Musselman family deeply regrets and mourns the passing of their beloved Jim on August 7, 2014, at the age of 99. While his family grieves his passing, they celebrate his life and many exemplary accomplishments. A distinguished artist, dedicated educator, and true humanitarian, Jim Musselman embodied the essence of "giving back." He taught thousands of students, sharing not only his knowledge of the subject, but a perspective on the world, using art as an inspirational tool for their self-expression and personal growth. He was a proud citizen of Allentown and contributed his time, resources and abilities in support of the arts, leaving his mark on the region's cultural environment. Jim and Bertie, his wife of sixty-one years, shared a remarkable relationship based on their deep love and respect for each other. He was a loving mentor to his children, Jamie and Jim Jr. and granddaughters, Hadley and Justine, setting high standards for their character and achievements while supporting their aspirations. Upon graduation from Kutztown University in 1943, he enlisted in the Navy and volunteered for the Navy Raiders and Underwater Demolition Team. After his discharge from the Navy, he served on the board of the Veterans Service Center in Allentown. In 1947, Jim began his illustrious thirty-five year career that established William Allen High School's art department as one of the finest in the nation. He remained relentlessly committed to the support of his students, constantly obtaining scholarships and work opportunities for them. He continued his academic quest at Columbia University, earning a Master of Arts degree. He was diligent in his pursuit of education and took courses throughout his career, including several summer sessions at the Chicago Fine Arts Center. He served as coordinator of the Pennsylvania Regional Summer School of the Arts for nine years. In 1973, the Allen High Art Center was dedicated to him in recognition of his outstanding ability as an artist and devoted teacher and in appreciation of his service to his students, his school and community. Upon his retirement from teaching, Jim, Bertie and daughter Jamie, merged years of expertise and combined abilities to create Musselman Advertising, Inc. located at Sixth and Hamilton Streets in downtown Allentown. The agency was operated on the philosophy that a successful business is one that gives back, using its resources to support the community. Jim believed passionately in community service and dedicated his entire life to helping others. Throughout his life, Jim received numerous awards including: The Allentown High School Alumni Award, Kutztown State College Distinguished Alumni Award, The George Washington Freedoms Foundation Award, The Pennsylvania Art Education Association Outstanding Art Educator Award, and the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Allentown Arts Commission at which time he was presented with a life size portrait painted by former student, Ann E. Schlegel. A five- pillar stone sculpture, created and installed by former art student and renowned sculptor Dan Kainz, stands on the campus of Allen High School as a tribute to the art department. In 2013, he was honored by the Allentown Art Museum of the Lehigh Valley. Jim and Bertie were awarded the Allentown Arts Ovation Award and the Allentown-Lehigh County Chamber of Commerce Distinguished Service Award in recognition of their many years of community service. In 2003, the James Musselman Arts Development Center was dedicated at the northwest corner of Sixth and Hamilton Streets in Allentown which is now the headquarters for Youth Education in the Arts (YEA) serving young people locally and nationally. As a young man, he served as a scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop #30 for eight years and as a youth leader for the YMCA. During his teaching and professional career, he served on the boards of the Pennsylvania State Education Association, Civic Little Theatre, Baum School of Art and the Allentown Arts Commission. A prolific watercolorist, his work has been featured in many one-man shows including the Kemmerer Art Museum, Bethlehem Civic Center, Moravian College, Muhlenberg College, Lehigh University, and The Baum School of Art. In 1980, he was awarded a retrospective show at the Allentown Art Museum showcasing his diverse artistic skills. Jim's personal qualities outshone his considerable accomplishments. He was a model of professional rigor and integrity who inspired students and assisted colleagues who sought his advice and guidance. His engaging personality, generosity and caring for others endeared him to everyone. He had a deep capacity to understand people, which made him an extraordinary teacher and leader. His knowledge and passion for art was encyclopedic, the result of a voracious reading habit and an inquiring mind. Though he spent his early life battling odds that might have devastated a lesser person, his quest for self-improvement never ceased. The family wishes to thank the many former students who have stayed in touch with him enriching his life with their friendship. It is with heartfelt thanks that the family extends its gratitude to all those who have contributed to Jim's causes during his lifetime. This exceptional man will be missed by all those who touched his life, as he unforgettably touched theirs. He lived by an old Quaker belief: "I shall pass through the world but once. Any good, therefore, that I can do or any kindness that I can show to any human being, let me do it now." Survivors: Wife, son, James P. Musselman, Jr., daughter Jamie P. Musselman, son-in-law, James B. Edwards, granddaughters, Hadley Garrettson and Justine Musselman. Services: Jim requested that he be remembered by those who knew and loved him and that no services be held. Helping someone in need or doing a good deed would be a tribute to his memory. Contributions: The Allentown Art Museum of the Lehigh Valley and the Baum School of Art.

I loved him very,very much! He knew who he was. He gave me more than I ever thought a person was capable of, honorable, respectful, so amazing in so many ways.
He scared me the first year I was his student because I was so shy he so often embarrassed me, I guess to toughen me up.
He changed my life and does to this day. As I work on projects I hear his voice yelling at me. That’s the way I heard him. I am a very quiet person. Don’t like noice but his talking to everyone was yelling to me. Which I realized later was his way of making sure he was not only heard but understood. I found him to be a lovely man and as I found out later His wonderful wife is as precious as he is. Went to high school with his son and a gentleman he is I might add. I thank God for the gift I have been honored with having them in my life.

Like the entry before mine, I just learned of Mr Musselman's passing after thinking of him and googling his name. He was more than an art teacher, he was a life teacher. I still quote him to this day: "you learn to draw by drawing." But substitute anything you want to learn and it becomes, "you learn to do by doing." What a legacy he leaves to so many through a life well-lived. I'm blessed to have had him as a teacher.

Just learned this today when I thought to google Mr. Musselman. My sincere condolences to the Musselman family. I am so sorry for your loss.
Mr. Musselman was my art teacher junior and senior year. The art room on the 3rd floor was my home for 2 periods a day, so we spent a lot of time together. He taught me to think outside the box and take risks. A fond memory I have is sitting in my mom's car, in the middle of winter, with snow on the ground, with Ellen Seinfed, sketching the old train station. I don't remember how many sketches we were supposed to have for class, but I still have the pen and ink drawing from that assignment,
A proud possession hanging in my home is a watercolor still life by Mr. Musselman.

Mr. Musselman is an inspiration to my creativity since high school, 1964-1967. Before school and after, and during my scheduled art classes, his art room was my refuge. What a legacy he leaves; a teacher in so many facets of life. May his family take solace knowing that his life was a blessing to so many.

September 16th, 2014

I must have been given a message from the Angels on August 16th, 2014, when all of a sudden, I found myself thinking about my favorite teacher and mentor, Jim Musselman. I wrote his name on my "To Do" list that day, to thank him for making such a huge impact on my life. His spirit has been with me always since I was blessed to be one of his art students from 1972-74.
Little did I realize that Mr. Musselman had passed just 9 days before. Maybe that was Mr. Musselman's spirit saying his "Farewell until we meet again in Heaven"?
I remember that he had a huge sign across the top of his classroom that said, "No one ever became a success by working an 8 hour day." I expanded that thought one day to encourage a family to live their dreams and buy their dream home to secure their future. I said, "No one ever became a success by playing it safe". Mr. Musselman always encouraged everyone to go after their dreams, with FAITH, FOCUS,COMMITMENT,& a POSITIVE MENTAL ATTITUDE. He pushed us all beyond our boundaries to become the best that we could be.
I will miss him dearly and give my deepest heartfelt condolences to Bertie, Jamie, and Jim.
He would want me to share this original poem with you. I entitled it, "The Voice Within"
*****************************************
Oh, Charmed One,
whose soul sparkles
like the sun-kissed dew,
Keep on your path
for you have learned tenderness
from hard trodden pathways
and compassion
from well-fought failures.
Let not your heart be troubled
by the challenges of Man,
but heed the 'Voice Within'
and follow
the gateway to your Fortress.
********************************************
Mr. Musselman is smiling down on us. His spirit will continue to always be with me until we meet again in Heaven.
May God bless you all.

For me, the highlight of my days at William Allen High was James Musselman. He wasn't just a great art teacher, he was the greatest mentor, motivator, and life coach that ever walked those halls. He instilled in me an appreciation of art and design and a work ethic that became part of the fabric of who I am today. I will remain forever grateful to him. My heart goes out to Jamie and his family on their profound loss.

Dearest Bertie, Jamie and Jim,
My sincerest sympathy on the passing of my beloved art teacher, cooperating teaching and friend who made such a profound impact on my life. Words can not express the sadness I feel but the thoughts of how he influenced my life from the time I was a young girl fill my heart. He taught more than art to the many who passed through his classroom. He instilled a strong work ethic and a true caring for humanity in every person he touched. His many lessons that he has taught me were passed along to all of my classroom students. I will truly miss you, Jim.

I just found out about Mr. Musselman's passing yesterday. What more can I say that hasn't already been said of this wonderful person? After my beloved father, Jim was the greatest influence in my life. Now they are both gone, and there is sadness in my heart. My sincerest condolences go out to his wife Bertie and family. There was an article in the paper on Jim when he was a young lad, and I wrote a letter to the Editor on my experiences being in his classes. He contacted me and I met with him, we had lunch together when he was 86 and he was still amazing to share company with.

It's so touching to read the memories that others had of Jim. He was obviously a wonderful teacher and mentor to so many people. I knew Jim in a different capacity -- as a longtime neighbor. Before I met Jim, I was aware of his reputation as an outstanding artist. Upon our first meeting, I thought that art would be a logical topic of conversation. To my surprise, he instead told me about his experience as a boxer when he was a young man. I've always had an interest in old-time boxers, and we had a great time reminiscing. I was so surprised that such a refined gentleman and artist as Jim had an interest in boxing, let alone had been a pugilist himself. Jim and Bertie have been wonderful, thoughtful neighbors for almost twenty years, and my wife, Tena, and I are going to miss him dearly. Bertie, our deepest condolences to you, and always know that we are here to help you in any way we can.

My teacher, mentor and friend. One of the greatest influences in my life. When other people think back on their lives they probably think of partying and good times hanging out with friends. When I think back it is the Art Room and Mr. Musselman. That was my love and my life. Thank you Jim for all that you gave to all of us. You gave us everything you had so that we would go out and be everything we could be. My nickname was Mess in High School but you called me "Messy". I'll never, ever forget you Jim, I love you. My love also goes out to Bertie, Jamie and Jimmy. May God bless you and keep you and wrap His arms around you.

Mr. Musselman guided so many of us through those turbulent adolescent years. While he especially pushed and goaded and challenged those he thought had a future in art, he kindly mentored every student who spent time in the art room regardless of artistic aspirations. Respect for others and willingness to work hard were the only rules. Mr. Musselman had high expectations for all of us and way more faith in what we could do than we had in ourselves. As he did with so many students, he taught me to believe in myself and set me on the path to art school. That art room was my sanctuary and refuge till graduation in 1964. My deepest sympathy to Bertie and Jamie and Jim for their loss.

August 13, 2014

In my senior year at Wm Allen I had knee surgery and was in the hospital for quite a while. Jim presented me with a beautiful watercolor with signatures from the students in the art room. He made me feel so special. Jim, May you soar with the angels. With much love and respect, Kathy Houlihan.

When I was a student in Jim Musselman's art class at Allentown High School during the late 1940s, he offered us instruction and wisdom that would serve us our whole lives. We loved him then but probably were not mature enough to realize how lucky we all were. That realization came later.

This is a person who deserved to live a long life to finish his work. He taught me the real meaning of hard work that served me very well through life. Jim and his famiy were true friends and I was proud to be among the first clients of Musselman Advertising. You will never find a family more giving and always willing to help. I was sorry for only an occasional visit since moving from Allentown but I will never forget how Jim shaped my life. My thoughts are with Bertie, Jamie and Jimmy.

August 12, 2014

There's too much to say. When you walked into his art department you saw the word "THIMK". He made you do that! He spoke of "Making It". He made you want to do that. Most of all, he made you feel a part of something, a place where you could feel comfortable clumsily put your best effort on paper and make you want to do more and improve. He cared about your future and encouraged you to as well.

You drew from the Rat's Nest, came in before school to work on poster contests and stayed late after school to work on your portfolio. You painted, sculpted, threw pots and became one of his and he had many. He hand lettered your name and address on your portfolio when you sent it to a college to apply for admission. He guided you every step of the way. He would find the talent in a student and bring it out, even when they were sure they had none.

I was told by a friend with an art background and after explaining about Mr. Musselman's art class, that I had a better high school education then many people had in college.

Through the years of Illustration and Design, while I was working on a project I'd hear his encouragement. He did that best.

My thoughts, prayers and gratitude go out to Mrs. Musselman, Jamie and Jim Jr. for sharing him with us.
Love you all,
Mario

Mr. Musselman was by far..the best teacher I ever had..I am sure people will see this many times from students who have written in the guest book. He taught us to create..not to be afraid to fail, to follow our dreams, and do it with dignity and humor. I spoke to people many many times during my music career I told people how Mr Musselman inspired and showed practical ways to keep our passions alive. A great man lived a great life..Love to the family..i remember clearly how he helped me make The Limits drumhead...your genius is alive in your students

I remember fondly an afternoon at the Allentown Art Museum where I shared the nicest hello and conversation with Jim and Bertie Musselman. I took a photograph of the special couple, both nestled together on a museum lobby chair. It was a treasured moment in my life to see them again. My sincere condolences to the Musselman family. Through my work with the City of Allentown, I got to know Jim on both a professional and personal level. He was a special person; extremely proficient and extraordinarily personable. He was truly one of kind. Allentown Art Commission meetings tended to be somewhat tedious affairs until Jim weighed in with his humorous and cogent insights. I loved his accounts of his time in the boxing ring.
I will keep Jim, Bertie and Jamie, Jim Jr. and all of the Musselmans in my prayers. Heaven will be a happier place with Jim there. It is never easy to say goodbye, but what a wonderful run he had. How lucky was I to share just a small part of the gift that was his life! God bless Jim and all of us he touched.

Here is a man who was instrumental in showing me possibilities, emphasizing that nothing much is going to happen unless you WORK for it, and that if a student showed initiative, he would be there for them. And did I mention FUN? My years at Wm Allen with Jim are still among my favorite memories... our trip to NYC was seminal. When my family moved from Allentown before my senior year, my only thought was to find a way to stay so I could have one more year with Jim. That was not to be.
I visited for his big birthday blowout at Jamie's, where it seemed like hundreds of his students showed up to celebrate Jim. What a perfect tribute to a most wonderful mentor. I'll always remember catching his eye for the first time after my thirty-year-plus absence. Makes me grin just to recall his face lighting up!
I'll never tire of relating stories of Jim and the art department to others. Godspeed, Jim. You've been with me since I left Allentown, and will be til I drop. Kisses and hugs from Bunny.

Bertie, Jamie, and family,
I Remember Jimmy from my early childhood, when I dropped my first pennies into the personalized piggy bank he painted, through Wm.Allen, and to this day. My Dad, Fred Spisszak, and he were great friends as young men to the time you double dated with my parents to the Allentown HS Class Reunion. I fondly remember the many moments when our lives' touched this man, who was so special to so many. The smile he could always put on my face is what remember most. He still does it to me, even though much time has passed since I laid eyes on his. As I write this I am smiling. His goodness lives in my heart and that will never die. My thoughts are with you, as you mourn his passing.

"Daddy Musselman" was the one teacher who touched my life and taught me all the artistic techniques that I am still using. I graduated in 1970 and was thrilled to be able to send a small picture for the opening of the art center at William Allen. He was so passionate about every aspect of life and shared that with us on a daily basis. His love for us was evident even when we angered him. I have often spoken of him and try to pass on what I learned from him. My prayers are with his family during this time of sorrow and loss. He will remain one of the most important people in my life, always. With love and respect, Magi Phillips

Mr. Musselman was my teacher at LCCC when it was on 5th and Hamilton St. I was in a lottery for Sept. admission or Jan. admission at Lock Haven U. I got Jan. so I thought I would take a few courses at the Community College. My Intro to Art with Mr. Musselman was so wonderful I wish I could have stayed there and only took art courses. One of our assignments was to pick out two 3X5 cards with an artist's name on it and then compare and contrast them. I got Salvador Dali and Hieronymous Bosch. Both used a giraffe in their work. The Burning Giraffe of Dali and the Garden of Earthy Delights of Bosch. A major contrast was the white angelic giraffe that was obscure compared to the burning one. I got an A for the work and an A for the class and he told me that my eye for that detail showed that I took the assignment to heart. I have always loved art but Mr. Musselman made me feel I could know art. I collect R. Atkinson Fox prints and others of that era. Whenever I am on vacation I don't miss an art museum. The Prado was one of my favorites but when I visited the Dali Museum in Florida I thought back to the day Mr. Musselman introduced me to art in his special way and I will always cherish that memory. My sincere sympathy to the family. He touched many a life and I was so fortunate to be one.

A friend shared this with me and so I share it with all of you.
"As long as we can love each other, and remember the feelings of love we had, we can die without ever really going away. All the love you created is still there. All the memories are still there. You live on - in the hearts of everyone you have touched and nurtured while you were here. Death ends a life, not a realionship." From Tuesdays With Morrie by Mitch Albom

I was an art student from 1966-67. He saw something in me, encouraged it beyond even my own expectations. He was a mentor in life and a friend for 50 years. I miss "the rat's nest". Sketch! Sketch! Sketch! I miss him calling me "Zelda". Why he did that I don't know, but that was his nickname for me. I signed cards and letters to him with a big "Z". I miss his critiques of my most recent paintings, most recently via e-mail. The Musselmam house was like Tuesdays With Morrie seven days a week and going there at Christmas was like lining up to see Santa Claus at the mall, but better. His gifts were a lifetime. To Bertie, Jamie and Jimmie we thank you for sharing your husband, your Dad, your home and for opening your hearts to everyone. Peace.

Condolences to the Musselman family. Jimmy was a special friend and art teacher to my father, who decided to take up art when he was nearing retirement. I have a beautiful watercolor painting that Jimmy gave to me on one of my visits back to Allentown. After she moved to Florida, my mother stayed in touch with Bertie and Jimmy. My parents are now both deceased, or else they would be sending very special words of condolence to the family. May Jimmy rest in peace.

I am so proud to have called him my teacher. He was a stellar individual, and I mourn his passing. I know that he was a WWII veteran frogman, and he told me stories about that (back in the 60's), and counciled with me when I decided to enlist after high school. He was a good man, and well admired by all of his students.

Not a day of teaching art or drawing goes by without remembering something that Mr. Musselman taught me about drawing, teaching...or life. Not only was he an incredible artist himself...He was a creator of artists and art teachers who have touched the lives of many. Thank you Jim Musselman...for a life lived to help us all find that love of art you shared. You will never be forgotten...

Mr. Musselman was a very special person - a true mentor to me in high school. I saw him last year in a doctor's office waiting room and we had such a nice chat. After over 40 years he still remembered me. He never lost his sense of humor and always made me feel special. Many happy memories in art class. An inspiration to many!

My fondest memories of Jim were our Monday morning visits. Hours before the ad agency opened for business, I would stop in and see Jim. We would look at his weekend paintings, talk about art and I would share my sketchbook sketches from the weekend. I learned so much from those morning chats... great conversations about art, history, life, etc. I cherish each and every book that Jim gave me on drawing and painting. Special memories. A very special man who shared so freely, encouraged and inspired me. Thank you Jim. My heart and prayers go out to Bertie, Jamie and Jimmy.

I did not know James Mussleman, but after reading his obituary in the paper, what struck me the most, more than his many accomplishments in the art world, was his desire in helping others and giving back to his community.

I am certain not only will Mr. Mussleman be greatly missed by many, but his passion of helping others will live forward in all of those he touched.

He brings to mind;

The Prayer of St. Francis

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love.

For it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

It was with sadness that I read about Jim's death. I remember him well and think about him whenever I look at the watercolor that hangs in our home. My father and mother held him in high regard and were honored to know him and Bertie as good friends.

Bertie and the Musselman family, Butch and I were saddened to read of Jim's passing. We always admired how he and Al came to the gym three times a week, worked, chatted and enjoyed. They all shared stories of their teaching/student days. May the memories of his wonderful, long full life help ease your pain during these trying times. I will treasure my flowers painting he gave me.

What a stellar man ... a man of great substance who lived an exemplary life and raised the bar on what it means to work hard. My most recent encounter with Mr. Musselman was at the gym, where he still worked out! I loved his artistic thank you note to the staff for all his birthday wishes. My sympathy to his family.

I feel fortunate to have known Jim and Bertie these past few years since I came to the LV to work as an arts professional. Their unceasing kindness, generosity, and true interest in others kept them active and young in outlook. Jim's advocacy for and support of young artists has been a huge inspiration to me as I pursued my career. I mourn while I celebrate a life richly and fully lived. Condolences to you, Bertie, and to the Musselman family.
