James Nichols Obituary

James E. (Jim) Nichols, a native of Colorado Springs, passed away at home on December 28, 2009. He was born in Colorado Springs, CO in December of 1937 to Caroline and Sid Nichols, but spent the majority of his life in Manitou Springs, CO. Jim lost his life to complications from lung and brain cancer. He never lost his positive attitude and fought the good fight, never complaining through his trial. He can now be at peace. Jim worked throughout high school as a guide at the Cave of the Winds, for El Paso County in 1956 and 1957 as a surveyor. Jim was a hydro plant operator for the City of Colorado Springs at the Manitou Hydro Plant in 1957 and 1958. After his schooling was finished, he worked for Colorado Research Corporation in Broomfield, Colorado from 1959 through 1964. He began work in June of 1964 for Kaman Nuclear Corporation (later known as Kaman Science Corporation), until his retirement in 1995. Jim was an instrumentation engineer. Jim was a graduate of Manitou High School, having attended all 12 years there, and a graduate of Central Technical Institute, graduating at the head of his class. He married his childhood sweetheart (and best friend) Barb (Meury) Nichols in 1956 at the Holy Rosary Chapel in Cascade, CO. Jim was a volunteer fire fighter for North Suburban Volunteer Fire Department from 1965 through 1970, serving as secretary-treasurer for the Department. He joined the Manitou Springs Volunteer Fire Department in 1970 and was a volunteer through 1995. He served on the Charter Review Committee for the City of Manitou Springs. Along with his wife Barb, Jim organized the all-school reunions for Manitou Springs schools from 2001 through 2007, annual reunions with classmates from 1956 and all previous years. Jim's hobby was meteorology, supplying the NWS and CoCoRaHS with weather data from his station in Manitou Springs from 1970 to present. Jim loved his bowling, and gardening was a yearly project, expanding each year until neighbors hid, wanting no more zucchini, and the deer and rabbits learned how to outsmart him. Leaving behind to cherish his memory are his wife of 53 years, Barb (Meury) Nichols, his son Sid Nichols, of Manitou Springs, sisters Ann Nichols of Manitou Springs, Netta Lowderman of Colorado Springs, brother John Nichols (Vonnie), of Manitou Springs and his beloved Grandchildren, twins Carly Nichols, of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Lindsay Nichols of Cocoa Beach, Florida and his grandson Tyler Nichols of Madison, Wisconsin, and good friend and mother of Carly, Lindsay and Tyler, Nancy Ganser Nichols of Madison, Wisconsin. Preceding him in death was his 5 year old daughter, Catherine Ann, his parents Sid and Caroline Nichols, and his parents-in-laws (who loved him as a son), Joe and Marian Meury. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Pikes Peak Hospice, 825 E. Pikes Peak Avenue, Colorado Springs 80903. At Jim's request no funeral will be held. Visitation will be held at Blunt Funeral Home on January 2, 2010, from 10 to l1am. A private burial will follow immediately at Evergreen Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to celebrate Jim's life at the Garden of the Gods Trading Post, 324 Beckers Lane, at 1:00 pm. The family wishes to express their thanks to: Dr. Jason Huff, Oncologist, and his staff and nurses at Penrose Cancer Clinic for their expert care, always keeping us positive and well informed; Clinical Study Nurse, Martha Brown of Penrose Cancer Clinic; and to Pikes Peak Hospice, for the wonderful support and home care they provided.

Dear Barb,

I returned from visiting my son in Australia today to read in the Gazette about your dear Jim's passing. I am so sorry, and my thoughts and prayers are with and for you. Your 53 years together is most remarkable in these times and serve as a loving example for all of us and as a blessing to your family. It is through the Manitou High School reunions I was able to reconnect with the two of you, and all of us who graduated from M.H.S. have benefited from the time and effort Jim put forth to develop and maintain a community of graduates that endures, as will Jim’s memory among us.

Please accept my heartfelt condolences to you and your family.

Barb,
Jim will certainly be missed by all who knew him. Having lived a couple houses down from his family all our young lives, we will remember his good

fought so hard and now he is at peace.
You were right beside him during all his illness. Our heartfelt sympathy to
you, and your family.
